Top 5 motives because of which reading is important

Posted: Sep 07, 2010 |Comments: 0 |

In our current times, the vast majority of people in the world can read. But there are those that chose that they didn't need to know how to read or write. This can be shocking to the average contemporary citizen, but it's the truth. For those of you who are wondering, here are some excellent reasons to make sure your children learn how to read.

1. Our modern society relies heavily on reading

The most important factor to take in consideration is making sure your children "fit in" with the rest of the community. If you cannot read, the most simple and standard day to day activities, will seem to be the greatest challenge for you. Imagine going to a store to buy some medicine, and you can't read well enough to understand the prospect of the medicine. That would have terrible consequences. And before saying, I'd ask the clerk, think about asking him what it says on the label every time you're buying something from the store. How would that make you feel?

Without being able to read properly, you would struggle with everything, from paying your bills to getting a job. Being illiterate doesn't make you stupid, but the shame and fear of being one, can do that to you.

Did you know that 85% of all juvenile offenders have reading problems? That is the proof, that not beeing accepted in a community can lead to rash things.

2. Finding a good job when you can't read is extremely hard

Everyone knows that well-paying jobs need people who can read and write. Doing desk office is totaly out of the question for people who can't read. If your reading skills are poor, a basic chore like reading and answering e-mail messages can take a whole lo of time. For a contractor to hire you despite this handicap, you would have to have extraordinary skills in all the other fields required for this job.

About 50% of the nations 16-21 year old unemployed are illiterate who have no chance on getting a job.

3. Reading is food for thought

Your mind needs constant "fuel" in order to become better and faster with dealing with daily chores. Reading is a great exercise for your brain development because it entitles you to learning new things constantly. It really doesn't matter what you read as long as your read something. Magazines, manga comics, novels or poems, they all have that same effect on your brain, which is making new neural connections so you can assimilate more information.

Children who can read before going to school have greatly increased chances of being the perfect students, as they are already used to assimilating information and they like learning new things.

4. Reading can help you relax

Be it reading an online magazine or a beautiful novel, reading can switch your mind from daily problems, and send you in a place you enjoy beeing. I would like to say that I personally don't agree with "reading homeworks" they give away in schools simply because not on soul will do something they won't enjoy doing. Making you read a certain title that you dislike, will likely cause you to hate reading, seeing it as a "chore" instead of being something benefical and pleasurable to do.

5. Reading can help self-esteem

Last but not least, reading is a great confidence booster. Why, you ask? Simply because others around us can do it. Someone who can't read properly will often feel inferior to those who can. The good news is that most people in civilised countries can read properly, the bad news is that the few people that can't do it, will fill overly inferior and will turn to other ways to compensate.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As a closing argument, I would like to say that reading is vital to our current ways of life. Without it, we can do nothing but sink in dark thoughts of what it would be like if we could read like everyone else. An illiterate life is one filled with solitude, fear and constant depression. Make the smart move, and make sure your child will have a good life.

In general terms, illiteracy is an inability to use language -- an inability to read, write, listen and speak. Today, it is usually taken to mean being unable to read and write at a level adequate for written communication or at a level that will allow an individual to function at certain levels of society.
