Confessions of a Candyholic

Gobstoppers Theater BoxWhat is your absolute favorite candy activity? You look puzzled - please allow me to clarify. The hobby or pastime that soothes your soul as well as your sweet tooth craving. That one place you love to be, where you are doing the one thing you love to do, consuming that one favorite sweet treat you love to eat? Starting to ring a bell? Well if you are starting to feel warm and fuzzy all over and drooling just a little bit, then you're probably in your happy place right now. So I ask you again. What is your favorite candy activity? (By the way, did anyone notice that the word "cavity" can be found in activity? Coincidence, I think not!)

While you sit there and allow your imagination to run wild, let me tell you about one of – if not my favorite – candy pastimes of ALL time. This dates back to when I was 6 years old, and I went to the movie theater for the very first time, at least as far as I can remember. My parents told me I could pick one flavorful delight from the concession stand to take with me into the theater. Approximately half an hour later (and fifteen minutes late into the movie) I finally settled for the Goobers Theater Box. I think it was the name that thrilled me – for this 6 year old, a "Goober" sounded like somewhat of a naughty word and that excited me! To tell you the truth, I have no idea what the movie was about or anything else that happened that day, but what I CAN tell you is that I never looked at peanuts and chocolate the same way since then.Peanut butter and jelly no longer had that Pavlovian effect on methat it used … hold the butter and the jelly; and bring on the chocolate! Goobers undoubtedly are the best thing invented since sliced bread.

Theater box candy certainly has had a tantalizing effect on me - sure I can go to the store and buy a bag of Reece's Pieces – but it is a totally different experience to open a fresh theater box of Reece's Pieces while settling into a red tweed reclining chair, in a room that smells like sweet butter and freshly vacuumed carpets, while watching the lights dim as the previews begin. And just like you might have that special outfit you wear to a party, or your "bummin'-around-the-house clothes," every type of movie has an exclusive treat to partner up with. A documentary has proved much more educational with a Nerds Rainbow Theater Box in hand. A comedy paired up with a theater box of assorted Jolly Ranchers Gummies escalates the laughter; similar to the quantity of tissues required following the effects of a box of SweeTarts compounded with a Romance-Drama film. Spice up an already sizzling hot date-night flick with a Hot Tamales Theater Box…or for that date-night disappointment, grab a box of appropriately titled Milk Duds.

So next time you go to the movies, ask yourself: "What flavor would this be?" Then go grab yourself a treat, lean back, and enjoy the show!

My kids definitely inherited my sweet tooth and always ask for a jolly rancher here or a tootsie roll there. So if they are going to eat sweets, the least I can do is try to make the situation fun and creative. Using my noodle, I gathered some great activity ideas for birthday parties, play dates, craft time… I'm not going to lie; I definitely "borrowed" some of these ideas from my girlfriends (and their husbands too of course! Credit must be given where credit is due…)
