Baptism And What The Scriptures Say About It

Posted: Aug 09, 2011 |Comments: 0 |

For the majority of Christians, baptism is very important in the life of a Christian. There are some devoted followers who believe that you are not a genuine follower of Christ until you have been washed with holy water. And this is the reason why the first order of business after the birth of a child in a family is to schedule and organize a baptismal ceremony.

Yet what do the Scriptures truly say about baptism? Is there a difference between the baptismal ceremonies from the Scriptures and the ones we know from modern times?

The King James Version of the baby Bible verses has many things to say about the act of baptism, how it is supposed to have regenerative powers to purify sins, and open up the body for the Holy Spirit to visit.

Here are a few example of such baby Bible verses:

"For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit." 1 Corinthians 12:13

"And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad, and glorified the word of the Lord: and as many as were ordained to eternal life believed." Acts 13:48

"Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost." Acts 2:38

"And now why tarriest thou?arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord." Acts 22:16

Contemporary followers of Christ practice baptism as early as several weeks following childbirth. Truth is, in the last Scripture verse Peter mentioned that baptism must only be performed following repentance from the individual, and we all know this is something newborns aren't capable of.

Modern Christian practices vary. Some denominations choose to follow the Gospel of Matthew and baptize infants in the name of the Holy Trinity. Others follow Luke's teachings as well as the Scripture verses of Acts, and so they baptize only in the name of the Savior, Jesus Christ.

Baptism is important to the Christian faith. Honestly, it really is not a big deal if you follow Matthew's Gospels or the Scripture verses from Luke. What is important is the belief in the Scriptures itself and the significance of practicing a baptismal ceremony to celebrate a new Christian in this world.

Many things are happening at the moment. Some aggressive preacher is telling his members to burning the Quran on 9/11. Barak Obama is ordering the US armed forces to leave Iraq. A baby became famous on the internet for chain smoking and, in the Philippines, controversies are abound for the killing of 8 nationals from Hong Kong and the SWAT's failed—and embarrassing—attempt to rescue them. So many things are happening in the world, it's easy to lose sight of God and His eternal love for us.

In the Holy Bible in the book of Matthew chapter two, we find a handful of dreams by a dreamer named Joseph. He was the soon to be husband of Mary, the woman that was to have baby Jesus, the Son of God. Warnings came in dreams also to the wise men in this chapter, and at least five times to Joseph.

Take time to think about it. Babies are people magnets. People of all ages – from little kids to grandma and grandpa – all scurry over to the mother showing off her newborn baby to the world. No one can resist smiling when seeing a newborn baby say its very first words. On the other hand, nothing worries us more than the crying of an awakened newborn alone in its room.

The followers of Christ should be reading the Holy Scriptures. It is not a concrete rule, mind you, nor do you have to read the Holy Scriptures in its entirety. But it must go without saying that as a follower of Christ, as a believer of the Savior and his sacrifices for us, Christians should at the very least care enough to read from time to time the Bible verses especially on their free time.

Learning the Scriptures by heart is very difficult especially for kids, but it can be equally difficult on adults too. The human brain is not used to remembering large quantities of text at once unless, which is rare, it is conditioned to do so, like the few successful followers of Christ out there.
