Bible Stories: King Ahasuerus’ Second Decree

Queen Esther had invited King Ahasuerus and Haman to a banquet, instead of saying the real reason for the invite, she invited them to come the next day for another banquet. So again the king and Haman came to the banquet. Again the king said, “What is your request, Queen Esther? It shall be granted to you, even to the half of my kingdom.”

This time she told him. “If I have found favour in your sight, let my life and the life of my people be spared, for we are all to be slain.” The king said angrily, “Who dares to so such a wicked thing as this?” Esther replied, “Our enemy is this wicked Haman.”

The king was furiously angry when he heard this. He ordered that Haman shuld be put to death, and he was hanged on the gallows seventy five feet high that he had prepared for Mordecai.

Esther told the king that Mordecai had been as a father to her and he was brought in. The king was kind to him and gave him the ring which Haman had had. Again he held out his sceptre to Esther to show her that he would do whatever she asked. Then she asked him to have the orders changed which said that all the Jews must be put to death.

The king explained that the laws of the Medes and Persians could not be done away with, but he told Mordecai that he could write a new decree. In this one the king said that the Jews could defend themselves and kill those who attacked them when the time came that had been set for them all to be killed. These letters were sent all over the kingdom also, and posted beside the first decree.

When the people found out that the king did not want to have the Jews killed, most of them did not try to hurt them. The Jews had a real victory over their enemies. Mordecai was made the highest ruler in the land next to the king, just as Daniel had been.

Queen Esther lived along time, and it is believed that she was still the queen when Ezra and Nehemiah came to the king to ask permission to return to Palestine. The king and his people learned that God takes care of His own. Ever since this time the Jewish have observed the “Feast of Purim” each year just before Easter to remember the time when God delivered them from great danger. They always read the book of Esther at this time.

The trap which had been set by Satan only caught those who has set it, for God worked for His people.

The Jews were still captives in Babylon though many years had gone by. Many of the people who believed God’s Word still wept when they thought of Jerusalem.
