Helen Keller, a Physical Reflection of How the Holy Spirit Functions Within A Christian

At 19 months old, Helen Keller lost her hearing and vision. She had not yet learned to speak. Yet this young, girl child overcome the odds, and grew up to become a symbol of triumph against the overwhelming adversity. Is it possible to know beyond doubt that something you cannot see really exists? Some would say "yes", so long as I can hear it, smell it, or touch it. But the application of your existing senses can fail. It is a common occurrence for a pickpocket to walk away undetected. The victim can go for hours without ever missing the stolen object. Consider also how easily you believe in the existence of the air beneath a bird's wings.

Without sound, can you ever be certain that moving lips are producing intelligent words? One needs only review the bible story of a priest that accused a woman of drunkenness because her lips moved without sound. Yet Hannah was speaking the most important words of her life.

With your eyes closed, and your ears sealed, can you by touch alone distinguish a difference between water and milk? Perhaps. At least if you know that there is a word for each liquid and you also know the definition of what makes them different. But how great would be the task, if you had no concept of language, communication, interpretation, and application?

Up until March of 1887, this world that lacked definition encompassed the entirety of Helen Adams Keller's existence. But on that day, a day that Helen Keller always identified as "The most important day I can remember in my life", a lady named Anne Mansfield Sullivan can into her world to lay change to the wilderness that accompanies a life without sight, sound, understanding, or communication.

I asked you how the blind could be certain that an object, person, or place really exists. I asked you how the deaf could be sure that moving lips are producing intelligent sounds. I asked you how one without knowledge of language and communication could come to understanding of unknown things. I wrote of utilizing the existing senses. But now I write of a more powerful means of coming into a realm of certainty.

By learning to trust the word of a personal guide, Helen Adams Keller grew into an intelligent, thoughtful, and self-sufficient woman. Anne Mansfield Sullivan, came into the life of Helen Keller as a stranger, yet she grew to become a guild, a teacher, and a trusted source of information.

Now in the case of Miss Keller and Anne Sullivan, it is interesting to read that Anne was also once blind herself. She regained sight through a series of operations. What a wonderful conclusion to this article. You see: I too was once blind though in spirit rather than in flesh. But then came conviction, and the Holy Spirit, and knowledge of truth. My heart opened and Jesus entered. Then, just as Anne Sullivan used her new eyes to lead Helen Keller into a new way of life, I seek also to use my new heart to lead others to know the same Jesus Christ that I know.    

Someone once asked me how I could be so certain that I was saved, how I was so sure that I knew the one true and living God, how I could be confident that the bible was not man-crafted. The answer is simple: I trust my guide.

Come to Jesus now. He has promised to make you whole in all things.
