How to Lead Worship for a small group without a guitar or piano

Posted: Jan 17, 2011 |Comments: 0 |

For nearly 20 years I have been training leaders to start and maintain cell groups or house churches. Most groups or churches feel that you must have a trained musician to lead worship for a cell group. This is a myth that churches fall into thinking that only a professional can lead a group of people to worship. In our cell groups, every person who attends takes a turn at leading worship following this very simple plan.

1. The potential worship leader must have a personal time of worship aside from the group meeting. During this time of personal worship make some notes on a favorite passage of scripture and songs that help you meditate and worship privately.

2. Make a mix cd of those favorite worship songs. We like to use 2-3 songs weekly for our cell group meeting.

3. Print out song sheets with the words of all the songs that you will be using while leading worship for your group.

4. Bring your cd or mp3 player to the group meeting or arrange with the host home or cell gathering what type of equipment they have to play your mix cd or mp3 list.

5. Arrive early to your cell group to insure all your song sheets and equipment is set up and working properly.

6. Once your group is ready for worship simply turn on your mix cd or mp3. It's usually better to play the music a little louder than normally so that people will not be intimidated by the sound of their own voice. Some people do not like the sound of their singing voice. To get the focus off of the music and musicality and onto actual worship, play your songs louder than you would for just yourself.

You don't need to have a great voice, years of practice or expertise of playing an instrument to lead worship for your cell or small group. This has worked for me for years. Take the focus off of the professional musician and make leadership attainable for anyone.

The seven churches described in Revelation 2-3 are seven literal churches at the time that John the Apostle was writing Revelation. Though they were literal churches in that time, there is also spiritual significance for churches and believers today. The first purpose is to write to the literal churches and meet their needs at that time. The second purpose is to reveal seven different types of churches throughout history and instruct then in God's truth.

We also talked about cell groups, a recent phenomenon of Sunday school where people gather to study scripture and other related Church matters in a small group, sometimes in a home setting. Will you tell me something of the beginnings of this “movement” in the Southern Baptist Church, and how

Historic Black College choirs across the country traditionally visit local community churches. For many churches it's reminiscent of a homecoming. Alum, prospective students and the community at large celebrate the choir, enjoy and appreciate the sacred music, pay tribute to loved ones that have helped financially support and embraced the school's mission which instills pride in the hope and dream of surviving and making it in a harsh world. Their presence is a testament of God's goodness.
