Jesus Accepted Slavery:How To Apply His Mindset To Our Society

Posted: Sep 13, 2011 |

Most of those who oppose the Christian faith do so in their doubts about the divinity of Jesus.Seldom are His teachings criticized, almost always they are just ignored, but occasionally questions are raised about His apparent acceptance of slavery.Actually the Bible does not record Jesus commenting on the morality of slavery. Here are His principal comments on the subject, first using a  parable: " No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon."(Luke 16:13)  and  "Whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave." (Matthew 20:27).This obviously must be interpreted as one of Jesus' teaching hyperbolas   when you also read "Jesus answered them, "Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin."(John 8:34) However the fact remains that Jesus never condemned slavery which was the  popular  norm in the Roman Empire during His earth ministry and His position on this issue  was then picked up and deepened in the writings of the Apostle Paul. So why didn't Jesus  use His moral  authority and opportunity to trash the reprehensible practice of enslavement? Since literally tens of thousands have been killed and literally hundreds of thousands have had their bodies permanently maimed because the military convinced them to devote their lives to "fighting for freedom", don't you think it's finally time to question Jesus' position on what has literally become a life and death issue for so many for so long? This issue has now been forced to the very top of the urgent priority list because the United States government has wasted so much of its wealth   murdering and plundering in its senseless foreign wars that it can no longer provide life-saving services for its own citizens.Yes the same government that has so gleefully and madly squandered its amazing wealth destroying life throughout the world now  has finally discovered that it can no longer afford to save the lives of its own people by financing essential social services. What an astonishing karma wake-up call! Moral and economic  bankruptcy has  become a pressing national issue. It certainly is now time to examine another way out of the jungle of disgraceful and nationally embarrassing degeneracy that we have been pushed into by demonic political death advocates.

The lack of concern about slavery that Jesus exhibited  is extremely important for Christians to understand because it can prevent then from obtaining salvation should they fail to do so.While trying to survive in this, the Age of Church Apostasy when it is common to see ministers preaching hate and support for the violence and even the crimes against humanity of warfare ,it is absolutely essential to understand that Christianity as opposed to political Churchanity, teaches and demands a separation from the world and its problems;an essential truth to internalize  as we  now enter the political election season. In God's mind the problems of the world are not only trivial and even largely  irrelevant within  His eternal time perspective, but even more important,by focusing on them ( ie.the "war on terrorism") we fill our minds with hate, the desire to retaliate with violence and the deep anxiety the false god NATION creates for us on a daily basis. In fact "fighting for freedom" which we are taught by the government is a honorable way to devote ones life, invariably leads to " hatred, contentions,  outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions,  murders, drunkenness and revelries", the very activities that Galatians 5:19-21 tells us " those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God."

Christians  need to become mentally obsessed  with the love, forgiveness and peace that the real God will give us if we keep our minds focused on Him rather than on one of the morally bankrupt  false gods that abound in our country or the problems of the world which tragically are about to become exponentially more severe and painful  as we travel still further into the  Tribulation period.

Jesus has called us to be  salvation and heaven-minded rather than world oriented  or even worse, politically motivated.

James 4:4 New Living Translation

You adulterers! Don't you realize that friendship with the world makes you an enemy of God? I say it again: If you want to be a friend of the world, you make yourself an enemy of God.

Unfortunately Church is often treated like a source of entertainment. Who has the best music? Is the pastor funny? Is there enough activity to keep my interest? What about the message itself? Does it line up with scripture? Do we only open our bible to read a verse and then go off talking about everything else that actually has nothing to do with the text? Is it important what a church teaches?

It's not enough to have just any religious idea about Jesus Christ. If you don't believe in his deity, you may have a comfortable religious faith, but you don't have saving faith, and your religion is not true Christianity. It is only the Jesus of the Scriptures who can really save you. The deity of Christ is an essential, defining doctrine of the Christian faith.

Historic Black College choirs across the country traditionally visit local community churches. For many churches it's reminiscent of a homecoming. Alum, prospective students and the community at large celebrate the choir, enjoy and appreciate the sacred music, pay tribute to loved ones that have helped financially support and embraced the school's mission which instills pride in the hope and dream of surviving and making it in a harsh world. Their presence is a testament of God's goodness.
