The Seven Steps Of Biblical Meditation – How To Read The Bible

Posted: Feb 16, 2010 |Comments: 0 | Views: 267 |

An example of revelation knowledge is when you are reading the Bible and a verse leaps off the page, hits you between the eyes, and God says, “This is for you right now.” These are precious experiences for the believer. However, for many, they do not happen often enough. There are seven things I do which allow me the privilege of receiving revelation knowledge every time I read the Bible. You can too.

Truth and insights leap off the page and an understanding of how they are to adjust my life permeates my spirit and soul. I love this experience and hunger for it every time I read the Scriptures. That is why I prepare myself by doing the following seven things. Prayerfully reflect on these steps and determine which ones you do and don’t use. Make sure you use all of them as you complete the exercises in this book, as well as during your regular devotional times.

7 Elements of Biblical Meditation

Below is a list of the seven things I do when meditating on the Scriptures which allow me the privilege of receiving revelation knowledge every time I read the Bible. I think these seven things are best described in comparison to the way most people read the Bible to provide a contrast. So, I’ve listed each element with both a do an do not. These contrasts illustrate the difference in studying the Word of God with a whole-brained approach instead of a left-brained approach. In other words using an approach focused on Meditation and Divine revelation instead of focusing on Study and rational humanism.

1. Be washed by Jesus’ blood. Do not have unconfessed sin
2. Do have a teachable attitude. Do not have a pre-conceived attitude
3. Have a dependant attitude, praying, “Lord, show me.” Do no have an independent attitude thinking, “I can...”
4. Do not read quickly. Instead, slow down, ponder, and muse
5. Combine anointed reason, flowing pictures, music & speech. Do not rely on reason and analysis only
6. Do not read without specific purpose. Instead, read with focused purpose
7. Glorify God for insights. Do not take credit for insights

Following these seven guidelines when meditating on the Word of God opens my heart and mind to God speaking to me through his Word, revealing revelation knowledge that I, through my own reason and human wisdom, could not come to.

In my next article, “The Seven Steps of Biblical Meditation Explained”, I will look further into the seven steps of Biblical medication and further explain each step Biblically.

God designed man to be a daily recipient of revelation knowledge. In the Garden of Eden, man walked and talked with God. Adam and Eve were receiving revelation knowledge daily from Almighty God. Satan introduced man to reasoned knowledge and that has been man’s focus for understanding since the fall. But how should Bible colleges teach, revelation knowledge or reasoned knowledge?
