Antique cars divide the public like very few other items. There are those who find the whole idea of looking at old cars to be quite simply the most boring concept they can imagine. On the other hand, there are many of us who genuinely enjoy looking at the way cars have developed throughout the ages. It is often said about history “If we do not know how we got here, how can we possibly know where we are going?” and this is a very good way of looking at things. Seeing the way cars have developed through history is a fine way of getting a feel for where we are going next. You either love antique cars or you hate them. But through learning what you can from their little foibles, you can get an appreciation for how automobiles have changed through history.
As with anything that develops a following, antique cars have come to be the subject of a number of clubs devoted to discussing, restoring and putting on show the best that the medium has to show for itself. America is dotted with antique car clubs, to the point where there are some over-arching groups joining them all together as an American association. Joining one of these associations is the quickest way to find out about antique car shows and to get an appreciation for what it takes to get your own car to the stage where it is worth putting on show. As a beginning step, it is worth getting in contact with either your local antique car association or the Antique Automobile Club of America. They can point you to a local group which will see to your needs.
The summer is generally the best time for antique car shows, as many of the events take place outdoors. The end of June and the beginning of July are in many ways the weeks that get the season going with events up and down the country and from coast to coast. This year on the 20th of June, Richmond, VA will host its fortieth annual car show. This landmark anniversary will be celebrated in style at the Richmond International Speedway. Its website is at http://www.richmondaaca.com
For an event which takes in more of a weekend, the 3rd and 4th of July in Fletcher, NC will see the Mountaineer Antique Auto Club hosting their annual auto show. Getting underway on the Friday and continuing for the duration of the Saturday, this will be the chance for antique car buffs to really enjoy a bit of time looking at what the region has to offer in the way of antique cars.
A fortnight later, Pennsylvania will host two car shows on consecutive days. The 18th sees Williamsport playing host to the Susquehannock region’s 47th annual antique car show. The next day, Washington, PA hosts the Covered Bridge Region Car Show. There are events scheduled into October, so whatever your plans for the summer there is still a chance to get out and see a show at some point. Ask your local association for more details.
