How To Sell An Antique Car

Posted: Aug 05, 2009 |Comments: 0 |

Selling an antique or vintage car is different than selling a car that was manufactured in the last 10-20 years. The market of antique cars is a small market, and it is a highly lucrative market to sell into. You need to know who the customer is and how they differ from your average car buyer. If you want top dollar for your antique car, make sure you know everything there is to know about the average collector/buyer, the car, and the manufacturer.

Before selling an antique car, if you have not had your vehicle recently appraised, you'll need to find the going price. One of the best ways to do that is to search some of the online antique car listings to see what similar cars have sold for. Places to start include oldcaronline.com, eBay.com, and antiquecar.com. Once you've gotten a good knowledge on the market, you are ready to place an ad.

Make sure your car is in the best presentable condition. A classic or antique car that looks like it has been well taken care of will fetch a better price. Take quality pictures that you can provide the listing with, where you will show the details of any original car ornaments, upholstery, etc. In your ad, you should always include any awards you've won, clubs you've belonged to, or any other interesting history pertaining to the car. Be as detailed as you can, or be prepared to talk in detail about the car in person, to any prospective buyer.

Once you've been contacted by an interested party, schedule an appointment with them to view the car. Before selling your car be clear on your payment requirements prior to them coming, and make sure to have all necessary documents on hand. Know in your own mind what your minimum price is, and be prepared to negotiate. It's a good idea to have appraiser and mechanic referrals handy so you have something to show. If a car is to be picked up by a transport company, have your buyer sign a document releasing you of any liability. Lastly, never sign over a title until you have been paid in full!
