Motoring News: Motorists Unimpressed By Motoring Legislation

"Still have a clean driving licence? Never been caught for speeding or had a parking ticket? Congratulations – you're one of a dying breed of motorists who are yet to fall foul of the surge in motoring legislation", according to the Telegraph website.

Technology is playing a major role in the crackdown on motoring laws with CCTV cameras monitoring areas all around the UK. Exclusive new Telegraph Motoring research shows that it is now easier for motorists to break one of the new motoring laws than at any point since the invention of the car.

One of the highest motoring crimes is talking on your mobile phone while driving, with a British study revealing that talking on a mobile device while behind the wheel is more dangerous than operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. These results are predicted to fuel the controversy over legislation aimed at banning mobile phone use by drivers.

Telegraph.co.uk have reported that more than "15 million British drivers are caught committing a motoring offence each year, compared with 4.7 million back in 1980" – an astonishing rise of 219% in a generation. The reason for the huge difference could be the more relaxed driving style back in 1980. Having less driving restrictions and laws meant you were free to cruise around in a classic style icon of the future, such as the vintage Lotus Esprit and the Porsche 911, without having to worry about those flashing blue lights.

Mirror, signal, mascara is apparently the new law for those female motorists who see fit to apply make-up while behind the wheel. Women don't have a great reputation when it comes to driving (parking in particular), so the added 80,000 incidents a year caused by women applying lipstick or mascara really doesn't help their reputation.

Being negligent behind the wheel is something that deserves punishment by the long arm of the law, but UK motorists are being punished even when they aren't in their vehicle. The AA's Head of Transport Policy, Paul Watters says "you can be in bed and still be committing a motoring offence; the very act of owning a car can now make you guilty if you forget the smallest detail". He is of course referring to car tax and MOT, with 1.1 million drivers being fined annually for failing to inform the DVLA of any changes.
