A Guide to This Season’s Key Suit Trends

According to the fashion experts, this year marks a new beginning for men’s suits. Most of the major designers filled their catwalk shows with a variety of different designs and styles, whilst the high street stores are awash with a superb selection of tailored pieces. Slim and classic are the keywords to take note of, whilst waistcoats are one of the hottest items of the season.

Tailored designs are back, which is great news for the well-groomed man. And, whilst the skinny look is on the way out, slim is definitely in. When looking for the perfect suit, therefore, search for classic cuts – think of traditional British suits for inspiration – with a trim fit. A broad cut on the shoulders is also recommended, as are military-inspired styles.

Modern double-breasted suits are another key part of the new season’s collections, although again make sure they have a slim, classic cut. Buttons are important and as such, it pays to think carefully about how many the suit jacket has. As a rule of thumb, the more buttons there are, the taller one will appear. However, there is a fine line between having too little and too many.

Advice issued recommends that whilst a one-buttoned jacket will do little for the shorter man, two is the ideal number for most. Indeed, two buttons helps to convey height and a slim waist, whilst still projecting a fashionable look. Four or more buttons should be steered away from, unless you are ultra-confident you can pull the look off.

Although three-piece suits have been given the cold shoulder in past years, this season they are back with a vengeance. In fact, waistcoats are one of the biggest fashion items a man can posses this year. However, avoid opting for crazy colours and wild patterns and instead look for the more classic, matching pieces.

If you really want to get a patterned waistcoat, then seek out ones with subtle stripes or fine checks. The v-necked variations are also popular and will help to define a waist more than a high-necked waistcoat.

In terms of colours, there are a few variations to opt for. Black is once again of the key colours this season, along with tweeds and natural dyes. However, pastel colours have also had a strong influence amongst the designers and, as a result, there are a number of vibrant suit options available. Bright greens and blues are the watchwords here.

Many of the designer suits can be expensive and out of the price range of the average man. But, the high street stores are great at getting the key trends out quickly and efficiently, meaning it is easy to keep your finger on the fashion pulse. Currently there is a huge range of men’s suits to discover, many of which include this season’s key style elements.
