Brief history and overview of Bloomingdale's

Bloomingdale's (or Bloomie's) is a famous American department store owned by Macy's, Inc. (formerly Federated Department Stores). Bloomingdale's began in 1860 when two brothers Joseph and Lyman G. Bloomingdale began to sell hoop-skirts in their Ladies Notions' Shop on Manhattan's Lower East Side. The pair were sons of Benjamin Bloomingdale, a Bavarian-born salesman who had lived in North Carolina and Kansas, and settled in New York City.In 1872 the Bloomingdale brothers opened their first store at 938 Third Avenue, New York City.

During 1940's, Bloomingdale's became the stage for gala events and fashion shows, including "Woman Of The Year, 1947." With music, lighting and sophistication, it was retailing as theater.

Today, Bloomingdale's is committed to lead the way with exclusive merchandise, customized services, and alternative shopping venues. That's both the legacy and the promise of Bloomingdale's.

Marketing concept of Bloomingdales: Bloomingdale's marketing is different from most retailers. Bllomingdales spends less on television and print advertising, Bloomingdale's requires all sales associates to clientele with customers. This process is much like telemarketing. Associates call customers with whom they have previous contact or sales to tell them about the upcoming sales. The idea here is to make the customers feel like they are insiders and they are receiving availability of products prior to the general public or pricing that is exclusive to insiders. Bloomingdale's management believes it is different from telemarketing because the associates develop relationships with the customers who ultimately welcome the calls. This is probably truer in the fashion departments than the home store. Associates receive a specified percentage of their sales as reward for the work done.
