Cleaning tips to extend the life of your uniforms

You want your dress or uniform to last longer and also retain its original brand new color, crispness, strength and freshness. Since you are often busy with your work, you can neither find time to wash it yourself nor trust the laundry because it may be damaged or lost.

As the time passes, the texture of your uniform grows weak. It acquires grime and certain harmful organisms, which become stubborn. They refuse to leave the cloth no matter how strong the detergents you use.

Some studies have been made recently which show how you can launder your uniform properly so that it can last longer and also retain its original color and shine. Some of the easy steps you can take are:

Pre-wash step

Put your uniform in cold water and rinse it. This will stop the grime, stains, blood spots, dirt or any other debris to circulate through the process of washing.

Deodorizing the uniform

Some times your uniform acquires your work specific odour like that of a hospital, a restaurant or a chemical factory. You may add ¼ - ½ cup of vinegar to deodorize it without damaging it.

Use SPEC-TAK color for white uniforms

SPEC-TAK color has been introduced recently in the market. It is cheap and particularly useful for white uniforms. It brightens the clothes and removes the yellowness.

How to wash your uniform?

You may now wash your uniform either in hot or warm water as per the instructions supplied for washing it.  While washing weakens the organisms, the soaps and detergents remove the debris and grime on it. The hot water eliminates the bacteria and clears the stains. It is recommended that the water temperature should be at least 130 degrees. Keep the uniform for a minimum of ten minutes in the hot water. It will ensure that the organisms like Staphylococcus aureus are duly killed.

Drying the uniform

The best way to dry your uniform is to tumble dry it for at least 30 minutes. Though it may appear to be a rather long time and may increase the power bill, studies have shown that the heat used in tumble-drying eliminates the bacteria and other micro organisms on them.

Ironing the uniform

For most of us ironing straightens the crumples and wrinkles and sets the crease on the clothes. Few of us know that the heat of the iron kills the pathogens that lie in the scrubs. Ironing is, in fact, the most effective way to rid your uniform of the harmful bacteria and clean it in the real sense of word. Ironing is the next logical step in cleaning the uniform after washing it in hot water and tumble-drying it.
