OK, so you have decided to take the big step and finally have some custom t shirts designed for your band, to try to sell at shows at the local pub. Aside from your shirts looking nice and and showing your bands name around town, it would also be nice if you and your buds can make a few bucks on the deal, to help buy some new equipment. So everything must be done just right, so it will go off without a hitch. Just as yo are ready to head out to have the deed done and your order filled, someone chirps up and asks “are we going to have them screen or digitally printed?
Does it Really Matter?
Whats the difference? Does it really matter how you have your custom t shirts printed? That all depends on a few factors that you have to take into consideration. Screen printing is the classical printing method, where the dye is forced through a silk screen onto the cloth. Digital printing is done in much the same way as paper is printed on by a digital printer.
A Few Things to Consider
While a digital printer can do multiple colors in one shot and doesn't require any set up tasks, it does have its shortcomings. To begin with, the ink has to be thin, so it will function in the digital printer. This means that you are going to see your best results on a lighter colored custom t shirt. Also, while smaller digitally printed orders are cheaper, the numbers change when the order becomes bigger. This means that larger orders of screen printed shirts are going to be cheaper.
Screen Printing for Dark Fabric
For a darker custom t shirt, screen printing would have to be the only way to go. Thicker, goopy colors that are required to cover the dark cloth well just won't work in a digital printer. With the screen printing system, thick goopy dye is placed in the actual frame and then hand forced through he screen using a plastic spatula.
