Although less couples are tying the not these days, there are still many who decide to have a traditional White Wedding, even if they are getting married in their 30's or 40's. The chances are that the bride's best friend is already married and so will be a Matron of Honour rather than a bridesmaid.
To be asked to be somebody’s Matron of Honour is in fact, a great honour! However if the Matron of Honour is 30 or older, a traditional bridesmaid’s dress will be inappropriate. Careful consideration needs to be taken when deciding what your Matron of Honour is going to wear. Remember this woman is older and has probably defined her taste in clothes. She will know exactly what she feels comfortable wearing and will not enjoy the Wedding if she is dressed in something she feels is unflattering.
Firstly decide on your colour scheme and try to choose a colour that will flatter your Matron of Honour. Small children can get away with wearing colours that don’t suit them but adult women cannot. Consider the colour of her hair and eyes and her skin tone. Dark haired women look better in deeper colours and light haired women in lighter colours.
Next choose a style that will suit your Matron of Honour’s body shape. It may even be nice to choose a dress that could be worn again at another occasion. The most important consideration is the fabric you choose for her to wear. Generally a plain colour is more sophisticated and more timeless and will be easier to co-ordinate with the bride and general colour scheme. If the Matron of Honour has a curvy figure, then choose a fluid fabric such as fine silk or chiffon. For women with straighter more athletic figures choose linen.
In order to keep your Matron of Honour as your Best Friend, involve her in the decisions you are making about what she will wear, she will be eternally grateful!
