With the growing demand for unique and customizable apparel, custom printed t-shirts have become increasingly popular. However, when ordering them, people must make the important and sometimes tricky decision on whether to use screen printing or digital printing for their shirts. These two types of printing will ultimately decide the quality, texture, strength, and price of the t-shirts. We’ll cover each one of these attributes so you know which one to use when ordering your next custom t-shirt.
First, the quality of the shirts can be determined by looking out how detailed the print and how vivid the printed colors are on the shirt. Digital printing provides a much more detailed and higher resolution print, since the ink is directly deposited on the shirt. Therefore, if you are seeking just shirt quality, digital printing may be the choice for you. Otherwise, take the other attributes into consideration.
The texture and strength of the print is how the print feels and how long it will last. Digital printing produces a much softer print. Although it does not last as long as a screen print, it feels excellent when touched. Screen printing is the opposite. The print feels noticeably different from the shirt itself. It is rougher and thicker, especially on darker colored shirts. This is because darker colored shirts require an additional layer of white ink below the actual print. However, the print becomes extremely strong this way. Screen printing allows the custom t-shirt to last years and years of wear.
It often comes down to the price when making a decision. This depends wholly on the quantity of shirts being ordered. It is a general rule that low quantity orders (below 6 shirts) should be digital printed, and higher quantity orders (over 24) should be screen printed. The quantities in between usually causes similar prices for both digital printed and screen printed custom t-shirts.
