Here are some martial arts tips for when you’re deciding on what style of martial arts you’re wanting to get into. Martial arts isn’t just something you can learn in a weekend seminar. It requires months and years of dedicated practice to get truly good at it, so you have to choose wisely.
The first question to ask is, “What’s your goal?” Are you taking up martial arts practice for self defense? Are you doing it for stress relief and meditation? Do you want to do it just because it’s cool? These are the questions you need to ask before signing up for lessons.
Different styles will lead to different results. Martial arts can be broken up into categories. These are internal vs. external, and soft vs. hard. Some styles will combine some of these categories to greater and lesser degrees.
Internal is the more meditative element of martial arts. You can find it in Kung Fu, Tai Chi and Aikido, just to name a few styles. External is sheerly for combat or tournament purposes. It focuses on strikes and throws and is exemplified in Karate, Judo, Tae Kwon Do and Jiujitsu. Soft styles focus on grappling techniques and can be found in some forms of Kung Fu, Tai Chi, Jiujitsu, Aikido and Judo. Hard styles are about power and striking. This is where Karate, Boxing, and Tae Kwon Do fall in.
With these elements in mind, it should be much easier for you to choose the right martial arts style.
