Selecting Your Martial Arts Equipment

Depending on what style of martial arts you’re getting into, you will have different martial arts equipment needs.  Some forms require a minimal amount of equipment, while others can involve a great deal of safety equipment.  It can be quite the initial investment.  You may find yourself searching for the least expensive options available.

Most popular martial arts forms require a minimal amount of equipment.  Soft forms, like Aikido and Judo, for instance, only require a uniform and a belt, usually.  As the focus of these forms is on throws and holds, there is typically little need for padding or other protective gear.  Naturally, it would follow that these forms require the least initial investment in terms of gear.

The harder forms will often call for protective gear.  Karate, Muay Tai, and Tae Kwon Do are examples of fighting styles that emphasize punching and kicking.  Along with the uniform and belt, you can expect gloves, foot padding, a mouth piece and possibly head gear.  Obviously, these forms will cost you a bit more money for equipment than the softer forms.

Then, there are the weapon based forms.  Kendo (Japanese fencing) is a great example of this much larger investment.  You have to have a two piece uniform that often costs in the hundreds of dollars, along with a masked helmet, gloves and body padding.  You will also need a shinai, or bamboo practice sword.  Needless to say, this involves quite an initial investment.

When you shop for your martial arts equipment, make sure that you find a resource who will supply quality merchandise for the lowest price.  While on one level, money is no object when it comes to safety, on the other, you shouldn’t have to spend more than you absolutely have to for the same equipment.
