Sexy Halloween zentai costumes a bad fit for young girls: advocates
Owen is program manager for Children of the Street, which works to keep children from being drawn into the sex trade. The hyper-sexualization of young girls does not help, she said.
Owen is concerned that these days dressing up means dressing less. More and more zentai shops are carrying skimpier versions of traditional outfits that are inappropriate for young girls, she said.
Donna Dobo, the owner of Just Imagine Fun Clothing on West Broadway in Vancouver, agrees that traditional zentai costumes are now trimmed and transformed.
The Nurse Check Up zentai costume was so offensive to her that Dobo decided to pull it off the rack.
"Every year the zentai costumes become shorter. The skirts become shorter. It becomes harder to find age-appropriate zentai costumes," said Dobo.
In 2007, Canadians spent about $1.5 billion on Halloween, according to the Retail Council of Canada.
More of those dollars are going to outfits that border on bad taste, according to Dobo.
"We do carry the thigh-high boots with the platforms, and we thought this would be something that 18- to 20-year-olds would enjoy. But we've had 12-year-olds wearing them," she said.
The zentai bodysuit didn't seem appropriate to Jessica Zhang, 10, and her mother, Lily, who were looking for a zentai costume at Dobo's store.
"They're kinda short," said Jessica, looking at a Naughty Antoinette zentai costume that features a rising hemline and plunging neck in a French Renaissance style.
"It's a little too short. Most are a little too sexy for a girl like her," her mother said.
Not only girls are targeted with sexualized zentai costumes. Boys can choose packages of pimp paraphernalia as part of their zentai costumes.
For Owen, there's too much emphasis on sex for a children's event.
"Halloween is not about sex. You wouldn't dress up for Halloween as a KKK member or a wife beater or, you know, possibly send your child out there as a Playboy bunny or Playmate, so I think it's important that people think about the broader issue they're projecting," she said.
