Whilst a growing number of men are choosing to have their shirts made especially for them after finding the choice of sizes, styles and fabrics of “off the peg” shirts too limiting, the misuse of terms such as bespoke, tailor made, made to measure and custom made is increasingly leading to confusion and disappointment as shirts, supposedly made specifically for the individual, fail to impress.
The origin of the term bespoke dates back to the days when a customer ordering a garment would select and reserve a cloth that was then “bespoken” or “spoken for”, ensuring that the highest quality of purchase was made for the money given.
Today bespoke means “made to personal specification”. It entails meticulous attention to detail, exceptional cutting and making skills, and a wide choice of quality fabrics when constructing clothing such as business suits, menswear, men’s suits, custom and cotton shirts and more.
It differs markedly from, and is superior to, the more widely available “made to measure” item, which is a limited alteration to a pre-determined style and make.
A bespoke shirt differs from the more common shirt offered by many outlets which is merely altered from a stock or standard pattern. We take up to 15 separate measurements and note each client’s unique physical characteristics, as well as details such as which wrist they wear their watch on.
