Warm Winter Layering Ideas for Plus Sizes

Posted: Jan 24, 2011 |Comments: 0 |

As the winter cold sets in, people start hauling their sweaters and thick coats out of storage. While it can be comforting to cover up and not have to worry about a few extra pounds stretching your clothes in odd directions, winter clothes can add a lot of bulk to any size frame. The effect is especially obvious, however, on those who wear plus-size clothes. Learning to layer your clothes is an important way to minimize the bulk; you'll find a lot of great apparel for doing just that at online retailers like Just My Size and Avenue. Here are some ideas for layering your clothes to stay warm if you are a plus-size gal or guy:

Start Small

Since you are layering your clothes, there's no need to grab the warmest, thickest thing in your closet when the temperature drops. Instead, layer two or three items in thin to medium thicknesses. Start with a thin shirt in rayon, nylon, cotton, silk or any of the new insulating fabrics that will lock in your body heat while wicking away moisture. You can wear these shirts alone with a vest or jacket or under another shirt or sweater. By dressing in layers, you simply remove the top layer if it gets too hot or put more on if it gets too cold.

Warmer Legs

Many manufacturers also make pants and leggings in thin, insulating materials. Wear a pair under your jeans or slacks if you're going to be outside for awhile. If you will be making quick trips between warm buildings and the cold outside, opt for leggings and tights--especially under a skirt or dress--for an added layer of comfort that won't cause you to overheat in warm buildings.

Comfortable Coats

A stylish winter coat, especially in a bright color or light neutral, can make you appear leaner. Plus-size ladies and men should opt for coats that fall at mid-thigh or lower to create the impression of a longer silhouette. Look for coats that are less structured and that flare a bit at the bottom. Embellishments near the neckline of the coat are great, too, because they draw the eye upward. Jackets made with fleece or one of the synthetic insulating fabrics will be thinner but provide the same amount of protection as a thicker coat.

Warm Accessories

To incorporate the right accessories into your winter outfit, start with a pair of mittens or gloves in a neutral color and a matching or complementary scarf. Longer scarves that fall below your waistline will make your body look longer and leaner, and a more neutral color will make accessories that fall near your waistline less obvious. Top it off with a colorful winter hat to help draw the eye up toward your face and to maintain your body heat. Look for winter boots that have removable liners so you can adjust your comfort level, and be sure to invest in a few pairs of warm socks, too.
