Diary of a Coaching Start-up - Part 1; What's in a Name?

Part 1 - What's in a Name?

The dream of entrepreneurship has been calling me. Softly at first (usually during a particular boring time at the day job), and building steadily overtime until recently when it has been roaring at me incessantly.

That dream of independent wealth. Living an extraordinary life; ripping off the shackles of wage slavery; taking control and becoming the master of my own destiny.

It has called - and I have answered - I've taken the magnificent and let me add scary step - the leap of faith to become a small business owner.

I can do this. I have the training, the skills, the talent, possible even personality - what more could one ask for?. Well.... that's not a question to be taken lightly I have since found out.

Speak to any established business owner about a start up and they look at you with envy. Ahh... the stars in your eyes; that youthful drive and passion to pursue the dream of business ownership; the innocence. Like your family and friends (whose job it is to support you 100% no matter how deluded you are) the words of these business giants are supportive. They look across at you with knowing smiles of business gentry patting your ego you gently on the back saying ‘that's great - I love it... BUT....' And like sweet nectar honey words of business wisdom flow. They share the excitement for your vision - your ideas - your enthusiasm ...but - always a but.

BUT you know just by looking at them that while the doors are open on their business, the passion has taken a coffee break - and they desperately need one, (preferably with a shot of hard liquor). I long for their experience, and they my naivety.

So with encouragement and a few words of the wise I begin my great adventure of start-up-dom. The first call of business is the registering my business name.

Do you know how many businesses are out there who just - coincidently I might add - have exactly the same name I want. What was to be such a simple exercise turned out to be a marathon. Talk about frustrating, I almost experienced my first business loss as the phone was ‘accidentally' thrown at my computer screen during an altercation with the ASIC (Australian Name Register) website. I wasn't naive enough to have just one name picked out either - a list of 8 some quirky some flat out simple, but all rejected. Ego bruised and two weeks later I hit the jackpot, and conclude if the name register was the first hurdle of red tape then maybe those buts were right - in this case anyway.

So the name I finally went with - Faith Matters - because lets face it if all business ownership is at all like dealing with name registration then I am going to need a lot of it! Moving forward, I choose not to be discouraged by the excessive wrinkles or grey hairs of the existing owners (cause lets face it if worse comes to worse with all my independent wealth I will be able to afford a few beauty treatments). Instead, I‘ll keep my business vision in the forefront of my mind, keep the starry eyed innocence (it's a good look) put my faith hat on (purple by the way), and wear it with pride. Wish me luck!

Meeting the Challenge of Remaining Positive
By: Cristina Favreau | 20/02/2007 | Entrepreneurship
As entrepreneurs, it’s easy to get discouraged. The tricky thing about being positive is that it’s an attitude, not a feeling. It’s a state of mind that is self-induced. How often do you hand that control over to someone -- or something -- else? The truth is, you can allow yourself to let these external factors control you, usually causing a negative attitude, or you can CHOOSE to achieve and sustain a positive outlook. Here are 3 ways I’ve learned to keep a positive attitude.
