1. Identify your irrational interpretations. We evaluate and interpret the events in our life all the time, from the day to day events to the larger scale ones. The way we interpret things is a reflection of our attitudes.
Thus, a negative, irrational attitude will reflect itself in irrational, negative interpretations and thinking. It is here where you want to strike a blow, but first you need to identify your irrational interpretations. So, do some introspection, notice your internal dialog in various situations and thus, identify these interpretations.
2. Make a shift in thinking. Becoming aware of your unrealistic interpretations is an important step, but it is not enough in itself. This only gives you the right material to use for the next crucial step, which is changing your interpretations.
The process of change in thinking and interpretations is a conscious one. It implies recognizing what is dramatic and exaggerated in the way you think, challenging that thinking and replacing it one thought at a time. In time, this creates a shift in attitude.
3. Get out of your comfort zone. The cognitive part of optimizing your attitude works optimally when combined with a behavioral part. And the behavioral part involves doing the things you find weird, bad or dangerous but when you think about them rationally, you know they may not be like that.
By doing these things, you're giving your mind new reference experiences. If these experiences lead to other conclusions than the ones your mind usually draws, it will successfully contribute to a shift in attitude. In the end, it is the change in thinking combined with a change in behavior that gets results.
