The Missing Piece of the Equation

Posted: Feb 24, 2011 |Comments: 0 |

You're in the middle of a challenging situation; perhaps something freely chosen, or maybe imposed on you by circumstances. You've done everything you're supposed to do--researched, analyzed, asked questions, listened to the experts, weighed out the pros and cons, created a fine plan, and set things in motion. By all measures, you've done everything right. So why isn't anything happening?

Regardless of the situation--whether it's addressing your child's struggles with school, conducting a mid-life job search, or breaking free from self-limiting beliefs--you've diligently and thoroughly gone through all the logical steps required for a successful outcome. And now you're waiting...and wondering...what gives?

If you're operating on the premise that input equals output, that all you need to rely on is your intellect and thinking to create a predictable, repeatable outcome, then it's easy to end up disappointed. Granted, sometimes things are that simple...a+b=c. But what if things aren't adding up? No matter how much time, energy, effort, and money you've invested, the corresponding results are just not materializing.

Take a minute to step back and look at what you've done, and what you haven't. What part of the process have you overlooked, discounted, or avoided? Where are the places of resistance? What internal work needs to be considered?

If you've done everything you can on the "outside", and you still feel stuck, turn your attention inward. Take some time to listen to you inner wisdom--your unconscious, heart, gut, intuition, higher power, god...whatever channel works for you. You may discover the missing piece that will unlock the answer.

In his book The One Thing Holding You Back: Unleashing the Power of Emotional Connection, Raphael Cushnir conveys his belief that the missing piece is emotion. According to Cushnir, the one thing that holds us back is a lack of connection to our emotions. To connect to our emotions is to access the key to being who we are and accomplishing our goals. The One Thing Holding You Back, published by Harper One, combines scientific research about the brain with practical application in the form of case studies and exercises; it's written in a style that's encouraging and practical at the same time. Best of all, Cushnir shows that emotional connection is a skill we can all learn.

If you're in a situation, and you've done everything you can think of, try switching to feel instead. Connect with your emotion and free yourself to move forward.

There are things that we can't control or change. Acceptance is important in those circumstances. But to think, as a general rule, that we have no power in a given situation, or life as a whole, is resignation. And while resignation and acceptance may look the same on the outside, they bear little real resemblance otherwise. Sometimes we need a little help to tip the balance, to get us into motion, to help us stop thinking we don't have any power in a situation.
