Your Life Is Unique

Posted: Feb 08, 2011 |Comments: 0 |

Just as each of us is a unique individual, we all have our own unique experiences of life.  Our pace, how we experience it, our thoughts and behaviors will vary.  That is what makes us human, real, true to ourselves.  That uniqueness is also the basis for life coaching.

As a coach, I join my clients where they are standing in the world today and help them walk toward where and who they would like to be.  My clients come to me when they feel or have a sense or inner knowing that it is time for them to grow, to change paths or maybe continue on one they had already started but had left for a while.  They know they are ready when they begin questioning their true purpose, how they will transition to a new place, and how they will create a new life or lifestyle.

That same sense of knowing will appear for you, when you find yourself asking similar questions such as: I think I am ready to move forward, what does that look like?  What is next for me?  What are new possibilities for me to experience now?  How can I live my life more fully?  What do I want my life to be like now?

How I knew I was ready to grow and how I move forward….

For more than 11 years I worked as a Career Counselor in a university, helping hundreds of students and alumni learn about themselves and choose their career paths.  I loved my career yet felt there was something more for me "out there".   I felt like I had been living in this self-created nice safe bubble.  I was active and doing a lot of good work – even growing in my career, but it was all from the nice secure confines of the same organization and same town.  Nice, neat and comfortable.

In late 2003, my bubble felt like it was stretched to its limits and was ready to pop.  That is when I knew I was ready to set myself free from it.  I began to question what I was doing with my life asking myself if I was achieving what I wanted to, developing the way I wanted to, living a life that fit who I was.   The answer was no.  So I embarked on a journey of self discovery, gaining my own clarity with who I was and what I wanted for my life and career.  The journey was an exciting, and often scary one...full of "what if's", especially since I never considered myself a risk taker. I knew that I needed support and encouragement to "let go of the ledge" of my comfort so I hired my own life coach - someone who challenged me to do more than I ever thought I would.

The result?  Discovery of our "perfect" place to live!  So, after a lifetime in New York in 2005 we moved to North Carolina, a place we always dreamed of, but never knew existed, a place where we did not know a single person!  In addition to that leap, I also discovered a desire to start my own business and completed my career transition from Career Counselor in a university to a self-employed Career and Life Coach.  Starting my life over was an enormous stretch, but one of the best choices I have ever made!

Thoughts for you….

If you feel that it is time for you to move forward in your life, a first step is discovering what you want to walk toward.  When you know what you want, the "how" becomes easier to see.

  • ·         To discover your "what", imagine that anything and everything is possible for you to experience, grow into, or become.
  • ·         From that place, begin imaging what possibilities you believe fit your unique self, would be the most grounding, nurturing, fulfilling, or meaningful.
  • ·         Remember to keep the "how will I/could I ever do that" on the back burner for now
  • ·         Let your imagination roam free
  • ·         Capture in writing all of your thoughts – in a list, an outline, as a story or journal about it, whatever fits you best.
  • ·         Continue this process, adding more details as you think of them, without judgment or censorship.
  • ·         Pretty soon, your "what" will begin to take shape.

Remember anything is possible!

Many of us simply live our lives by "chance" – waiting for things to happen to us, then moving on from that place. Instead of leaving our lives up to chance, goals give us greater control, can help us become more efficient and give us a feeling of confidence. Goals can motivate us to move forward and show us where forward is.
