100% Kona Coffee vs Kona Blend Coffee

Posted: Jul 31, 2010 |Comments: 0 |

Kona bean coffee is the most exclusive of Hawaiian coffees, accounting for only 1% of the total coffee grown in the entire world.

Kona has gained a reputation as one of the finest gourmet coffees of the world. Because of that reputation, many companies sell coffee labeled as "Kona Blend", hoping to cash in on this exclusive treat.

Many people mistakenly think Kona Blend is a blend of different Kona Beans. It's not. Kona Blen is a mixture of mostly other coffee beans, with a few Kona beans thrown in.

Kona "blends" that are packaged in Hawaii must contain 10% Kona beans. That means for every 100 coffee beans, only 10 have to be Kona. 90 beans out of 100 can be the lowest grade and cheapest

coffee you can buy, but as long as 10 beans are Kona, it can legally be called a "Kona Blend" coffee.

If a Kona blend is packaged outside of Hawaii, it only has to contain 3% Kona. So, that "Kona Blend" you purchase is mostly not Kona. If 3 beans out of every 100 are Kona, and 97 beans are not Kona, what you're drinking is not even close to the taste of pure Kona coffee.

Current Hawaiian law requires Kona blends to state the percentage of Kona Beans on the label, however there is no similar Federal law. So, if you purchase your "Kona Blend" outside the USA, you have no way to know what percentage of your coffee actually is Kona, and it could be as low as 3%.

As consumers learn that "Kona Blend" is mostly "not Kona," some manufacturers have started to label their kona blend coffee as "Kona Roast" or "Kona Style." This is also not authentic Kona bean coffee.

Hawaiian labeling laws require "100% Kona Coffee" to be prominently displayed on the package of 100% pure Kona coffee to certify authenticity. When looking to buy Kona coffee beans, be sure to look for the words "100% Kona Coffee" on the label to be sure you are buying pure Kona Coffee.

Once you've tasted pure Kona, there is just no comparison. Don't be fooled by Kona "blends." The real thing is always labeled "100% Kona Coffee!"
