Chaga mushrooms: What We Know About Chaga

Posted: May 24, 2011 |Comments: 0 |

The purifying properties of Chaga are documented as early as 4,600 years ago in Chinese medicine, where Chaga was called "A Gift from God" and "King of Herbs." Eastern health practitioners have been using Chaga mushrooms for thousands of years to detoxify the body, support the immune system and increase life span. In other words, the medicinal use of Chaga is not new.

Natural remedy: In the mountain region of Siberia, the locals drank Chaga as a daily hot beverage, much like we enjoy our daily cup of coffee or tea. They also inhaled Chaga smoke to treat respiratory disorders (pneumonia, asthma, and bronchitis), and used it topically to treat injuries or rashes. Its popularity quickly spread west to the Ural Mountains and Baltic regions of Eastern Europe. It is documented that Czar Vladimir Monamah was treated with Chaga in the 12th century for symptoms that are believed to indicate lip cancer.

People of the Siberian mountains still ingest Chaga on a daily basis, and many of them live to be over 100 years old, with good health through most of their lifetimes. Chaga is still used in homeopathic medicine to this day to treat a vast number of ailments, including ulcers, gastritis, cancer, and tuberculosis. Most importantly, chaga is used as a daily supplement to support the immune system and prevent disease.

Modern medical science often disregards anecdotal evidence of traditional remedies if they are not backed by research with scientific measurements and controls. In the past 40 years, scientific investigation of Chaga has validated many of the traditional beliefs about its healing and health-enhancing properties. Over 1,400 studies and articles have been published. (For those interested in the hard scientific evidence, please see Chaga Science). Nearly all the articles and studies agree that Chaga can preserve youth, increase life longevity, improve health, and boost life energy or "chi."

Currently in Asia, Chaga usage is wide. People take Chaga extract powder to build up immunity, treat influenza and other viral and bacterial infections, and improve skin elasticity. It is also used topically. Research by Japanese scientists has shown that topical application of Chaga helps combat the signs of aging, and in modern-day Japan, it is used in creams to treat wrinkles. Chaga has been approved by the Russian Medical Research Council and has been praised for its strong positive impact on overall health, immunity, metabolism, and blood pressure.
