A French Press is a type of coffee maker. A Stainless Steel French Press refers to the material it is made from. French presses are made from two parts, the bottom which is the carafe where the coffee is brewed and the top which is the plunger. There is a screen in the bottom of the carafe that captures the coffee grounds when the plunger is depressed once the coffee is done brewing.
Glass VS Stainless
Typically the French press is made with a glass bottom, this is the traditional model. The carafe is glass and typically the plunger is made from some type of metal or plastic. These pots have been around for quite some time. Most people enjoy their glass based French press pots but complain about the plunger. On some models the plunger is made of plastic or alumunum unfortunately these materials do not hold up under normal wear and tear. The models with stainless plungers hold up much better. Glass also does not hold the heat in the carafe as well as an all stainless model does. Glass has a more aesthetic look to it than the stainless does, which looks more functional, but if a good cup of coffee is sort after and it needs to stay drinkable for longer than 30 minutes than the stainless model is the way to go.
Cost
There are models that come with stainless plungers only which are less expensive that all stainless models. There are top of the line stainless models that are insulated and can run into the hundreds, the plastic models with all plastic parts are the least expensive models. Typically prices run from around thirty dollars upwards of two hundred dollars. A Stainless Steel French Press will cost a little
