The Different Coffee Beans

Generally coffee beans fall into two different types of beans which are Robusta and Arabica but this is not the names written on the bags of coffee that you would purchase as roasted coffee beans. For the most part when you buy these beans you will be buying the beans so named for the regions or countries they are actually grown in. This is where you will encounter Java or Kenya AA or Kona. So what you are actually purchasing are beans from coffee trees that grow in a specific place or region. For example, Kona is from Hawaii and Java is grown on the Island of Java and is considered an Indonesian bean. Each of the different types of beans have a different taste and characteristics although often you will not be buying a single bean but you will be buying a blend of different beans.

When you first start to drink coffee in this decade you will have a vast choice of beans and coffees to choose from. In the past several decades the coffee roasting business has exploded. After WWII generally people were not as well traveled unless they were military and stationed in France or Italy. If this is the case if the servicemen stayed on after the war ended they may have been acquainted with some of the coffee like espresso in Italy. That is if there was any to be had at that time. But many men brought their wives to the countries they and served in and then they encountered Italian espressos. When they returned back to the US they could not find these coffees. First of all the espresso machines were not made at that time for home use and second espresso was not that well known in Middle America. So they continued to drink the various ground coffees that came in bags or cans. The cans were sealed and when you broke that seal when you lifted the tin top the can allowed the coffee aromas to hit you in the face and it smelled good.

But generally coffee machines were a percolator or some form of manual drip pot or perhaps an electric drip pot. And of course the cans of coffee supplied the coffee to put in those machines. In most cases this coffee was made from Robusta beans because they were grown at a lower elevation and had higher yields and they were cheaper beans often dried in a dry process naturally in the sun which is also a cheaper way to dry the coffee beans.

As higher quality home brewing machines became more prevalent and also as people began to travel more and experience the coffee from other countries they began to desire better coffee. Also the income levels and disposable income began to rise and more people could afford to purchase high quality coffee brewing machines and the corresponding higher quality coffee beans also. Coffee drinking exploded especially using beans from small or gourmet coffee bean roasters.

    As coffee beans are roasted they begin to increase in temperature. As the internal temperature in the beans gets higher the sugar will become more developed or caramelized. It is this caramelizing that makes the beans taste sweet. As the beans become darker the sugar goes from caramelized to burnt.
