The Percolator Coffee Pot - Still a Favorite for Many

Perhaps your mother or grandmother used a percolator coffee pot, it was one of the first types and was very popular during the 1950's, but they were soon replaced with the automatic drip coffee maker. Still, you find some people still favor coffee percolators because they enjoy the listening to the percolator and it makes the entire home smell of freshly brewed coffee. It takes a little more time than an automatic drip, but you can find the percolators in electric and the stovetop versions. To make the perfect cup of coffee using your percolator coffee pot, you will need to add water to the bottom of the pot based on the number of cups you wish to make and the size of the percolator. Next, the coffee percolators comes with its own "basket" to put the coffee in, so measure out the course ground coffee, which of course, depends on how strong you want the coffee. However, if you are making eight cups, you would add roughly eight tablespoons for a good medium strength coffee, but you can add more or less depending on individual tastes. Either plug in the percolator coffee pot if it is electric, or place on the stove and turn on the heat. The water at the bottom chamber becomes hot it begins to work its way through the hollow tube of the grounds basket and then flows over the grounds. The basket has several small holes that allow the water to drip out through it, and this process is repeated several times up to about 15 minutes. Again, the longer you allow it to percolate, the stronger your coffee will be, so often it is an experiment to see what tastes best to you. In addition, some coffee percolators will make the coffee taste different than others and often the ground of coffee you use changes the taste entirely. This also holds true for automatic drip coffee machines. If you have a cabin or planning to visit one, taking along a percolator coffee pot is a great way to get a fresh cup of coffee in the mornings and truly enjoy the scenery. All you need is either heat or electricity; depend on the type of percolator you have to start the day off right. While many people today do not know how to operate a percolator coffee pot, the truth is, they are pretty easy once you have made a pot or two of coffee. What's nice about the stovetop versions is they last for many years and are simply designed and actually do a good job of making coffee taste delicious. They also do not take up as much counter space as a large automatic drip coffee maker does. You can't find coffee percolators everywhere since drip machines are the most popular, but they are available online and you can even find some used ones in antique stores.
