Why Blue Mountain Coffee is so expensive

The Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee is a globally protected and certified Coffee Industry Board of Jamaica which is labeled as such. Then Roughly bordered by the Kingston to the south and Port Maria to the north, the Blue Mountains of Jamaica rise to 7,500 feet above the sea level makes them the highest point in the Caribbean island. The rich, dark soil, rainy climate and good drainage makes the region an excellent place for the coffee production. But the coffee is not a native to Jamaica, but it is  the chief export of the country.

The Blue Mountain region of Jamaica are some of the highest mountains in the Caribbean island. The Coffee Industry Board of Jamaica has designated the ranges of St. Andrew, St. Thomas, Portland and St. Mary to grow the appropriate beans. Then only the highest quality coffee can taste well. No other coffee beans can be called as the Jamaican Blue Mountain than the original.

The Coffee Industry Regulation Act has imposed a specific system of grading beans. Generally there are three different grades of Jamaican Blue Mountain based on the screen size. The Screen refers to the dimension  used to separate the beans by size. The philosophy behind this method is that the coffee beans grown in higher altitudes are larger and contains superior flavor compared to ordinary beans.

The screening process also helps to eliminate the maragogipe (elephant beans). The green, oversized beans are a mutant strain originated from  Brazil,  porous and absorb the characteristics of the soil in which they grow. Then comparing to the Jamaican Blue Mountain, it is unfit for the coffee brewing.

The rules and Specifications for the Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee are very rigid. At least 96 percent of the beans must be in a uniform size, screen and also should be consistent, bluish-green in color. A two percent of beans can deviate slightly from this standard, but black or sour beans and any other foreign  beans are unacceptable.

The body, flavor and aroma of the Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee is one of the most important coffees of the market. The Restricted quantity along with the excellent quality resulting from meticulous cultivation standards, and the celebrated name that demands the attention of hard-core coffee addicts everywhere inspires the demand for this brew, and it is the demand itself that will undoubtedly continue to sustain the high price.
