With so many to choose from how do you determine the best packaging materials for your needs?
Bubble wrap comes in a variety of sheets and air pillow sizes. The size of the sheets can be modified by cutting in between the pillows. The pillows cushion the product and the plastic can help protect the product safe from moisture. It's also entertaining to pop the bubbles once you no longer need it to protect the product.
If you just can’t resist the urge to pop the bubbles on the bubble wrap, but like how it's light-weight, cushiony, and protective, foam is worth considering. It is similar to bubble wrap in that it is filled with many air cells. If you are in a humid area, keep in mind that foam resists moisture. It also cushioning and offers good shock absorption.
Have you received a package that has one or two plastic “pillows” filled with air as the cushion? These are becoming more popular. One of the reasons more companies are using the inflatable packaging system is that they are not filled with air until needs. This saves in storage space. Also, you can regulate how full they are. If you need more cushion, add more air.
Newsprint has been used for years as packaging filler. It can be purchased in pre-cut sheets or as a roll. Newsprint is generally made from recycled paper and is therefore environmentally friendly. This is great if you need to wrap items separately and also for unusually shaped items.
Or you can use a loose fill, such as peanuts. Peanuts are great for abnormal products. The peanuts are small enough that they can fit snuggly into the crevices. The texture of the peanuts offers cushioning like a shock absorber. And you can control the amount of peanuts that go into the box.
