Handling antiques and collectibles

Antiques and collectibles are old items considered important due to their age, beauty, condition, personal emotional connection to their owners, rare nature and other unique features.  Many antiques represent a generation and are mostly passed down a family tree. Due to their unique nature and the attachment that they hold it is important for you to take care of the antiques that you have collected over time to preserve their timeless value.

When handling antiques ensure that you store small antique items in locked containers and sealed bins where pests cannot infiltrate. Moths can destroy quilts and vintage clothing.  Spray antique wood items such as furniture with pesticides regularly to keep away termites, cockroaches, rats and other pests and rodents. The ideal place that we could store such antique papers and documents would be in a cool dry room. Also to prevent mildew damage to old photographs and art work hung on damp or outside walls, tape or glue a sheet of plastic to the back to create a vapor barrier.

Harsh light can cause damage to antiques including papers so make sure the antique is not exposed to the sun or any harsh lights. Smoke and air pollutants can cause considerable damage as well. The most common sunlight can fade wood, vintage fabrics, and porcelains. These items should be stored in a light-controlled room, with dark-shaded curtains for the windows to prevent harmful sunlight from damaging your antiques.

The first rule in cleaning your antique porcelain is to never put it in a dishwasher as its temperature can get too hot and the prolonged exposure can wear them down and cause them to crack. Instead wash your antique plates by hand and use only warm water and mild detergent cleaner. Antique furniture should never be polished or cleaned with commercial cleaning products or polishes. Instead, use a soft cloth sprayed with some glass cleaner.

The average Kenyan employer, on advertising a job even informally, will get no less than 200 CVs on the lower side and well over 1000 CVs on the normal side. If the job happens to be advertised in the newspapers, the number of CVs received can escalate to ridiculous figures.
