HO Locomotive Trains - Top 3 Features

Posted: Oct 16, 2010 |Comments: 0 |

The HO locomotive trains market is huge in the railroad model industry. This is primarily because the HO gauge is one of the more popular for the average hobbyists. One of the more popular locomotives is the Polar Express and at the HO scale it is around $300 if you are buying it from Lionel. This might seem like a lot of money but this model really is worth the money. When you go to a museum and see multiple trains moving around a very large landscape you will always usually centre your attention at the Polar Express, mainly this is mainly because of its stand out features such as real puffing smoke and a loud whistle.

My top 3 features of HO locomotive trains are given below:

1. My number one observation is that the power to consistently pull the carriages is very impressive. The diesel locomotive do this very well and in some cases actually go much faster than the natural limitations than the track layout allows for. Brands such as Lionel and Bachmann solve this particular problem by being able to limit the speed using a mechanism no matter what power output the diesel locomotive produces.

2. Most of them are designed in a very realistic and detail way. This makes them really fun to look at and they move around the track layout and blend in with the surrounding landscape. Overall the more expensive models are the ones that are more impressive.

3. Some of the models replicate the exact life like trains to a very high standard which is very cool to spot when you are just casually looking around the landscape.

If you are new to the fascinating world of replica trains the terms model train scale and gauge may be confusing, at times they almost seem interchangeable. What follows though, is a simplified explanation of replica trains and their scales and gauges (referring to track size) to help unravel this confusing terminology.

The largest scale standard is known as the O gauge and is mostly used as museums and shows. The reason for this is because the size is too big for most people's garages or bedrooms so the average hobbyist cannot make a layout that big.

In general Bachmann model trains are more focused on the cheaper end of the market. This makes it more affordable for parents to have their kids be collectors of train models. Otherwise what would happen is that you buy them one Lionel set and they ask for more of the same which is usually just too expensive for the average family.

Most model train transformers are used to convert the main voltage to that of the power source that is required to run the model trains. These are usually sold with a train set so that there are no issues with compatibility.

Trains are something that catch the hearts and imaginations of so many children. While many of us do not end up growing up to be train conductors - especially considering that the train is not what it used to be in terms of passenger transportation - that does not mean our love for the train must die off as well.

When building great model railroad scenery you need to have many components such as trees, buildings, vehicles, people and so on. How these components integrate is very important because it allows you to set a scene or a theme for the overall model railroad scenery.

Most wooden train sets are usually not as durable as the metal counterparts. The top models are however much more expensive because it takes a lot of skill to hand carve wood into a working train set.
