How to collect Vinyl Records

Posted: Nov 18, 2009 |Comments: 0 |

Vinyl records are so much fun to collect. I have around 1500 records in my collection so far. I started collecting when i was on the road (i am a touring musician). We had a show in Montreal Canada and i noticed an old thrift store near by...so i grabbed my bike from a bay in the bus and rode over to check it out. I spotted the only vinyl record in the store. It was Lynerd Skynerd Live double album for $3. I knew right then that i was going to start collecting! Just holding that record reminded me of my childhood and how buying a record used to be such a great experience. I would take it home, put it to the needle, wrap myself up in the lyrics and artwork, and get lost in the music. I sure miss those days, and feel a little sad for the younger generation who get there music with a mouse click. But hey...thats technology for ya! I dont really collect Vinyl for resale, I just love to sit and listen to and look at them. I guess thats just the fan in me!

Thrift stores are actually a great source of finding old vinyl records. I will hit places like Goodwill, Salvation army, Missions Attic etc... Prices are never really high at these places. You will see prices range from $1 to $5 per record.

Garage sales are also a great source for Vinyl records. There's a little more work involved cause not everyone has any, but sometimes you can get lucky and find someone who is selling a whole collection. Lots of times you will find that they will take a flet fee for the whole collection. For example, I offered a guy that was selling about 30 records ( 50 cents appiece) $10 dollars for the whole lot, and he was pleased to let them go.

Last but not least talk to family members. I have 2 Aunts that gave me thier whole collections cause they were going to just throw them away! (Oh the horror! hehe) Dig around and see if some of your relatives are sitting on a few old "gems", it worked for me.

I hope these tips help. If you find some good records out there, please feel free to share your stories with me! I love music and the bands that create it. Happy hunting!!!

You may laugh at the fact that I have funky house vinyl records, not because of the genre, but because of my choice of media. Why am I not alone though, and why do so many people see this as a natural partnership?

Vinyl records are definitely a blast from the past. There's something nostalgic, something delightful and something absolutely physically real about gently sliding an enormous record from its sleeve, placing it on the turntable and setting the needle to play from the right spot. It's a hands-on experience of music that isn't incorporated into cassette tapes, mp3s, or CDs. But is it only nostalgia that keeps us coming back to LPs and vinyl records?
