Koi Pond Kits - Making the Hobby Affordable

Posted: Dec 04, 2010 |Comments: 0 |

Loads of hobbies bring forth feelings of excitement, joy and fulfillment, particularly when the hobby involves a living thing! For the novice, there is always the initial excitement of going to the pet store, choosing that first goldfish, mouse or hamster, taking it home and thinking …… now what do I do with it? This happens time and time again! It's the same story with plant life, but that's a whole other story!

When considering taking up a "life form hobby", one really needs to do some major homework first. This is especially true for the novice Koi Fish enthusiast. Keep that wild enthusiasm and excitement in check, at least while you ponder what will be in the best interests of both you and your Koi Fish in the long term.

Whilst Koi Fish are remarkably hardy, they are not indestructible and deserve your full consideration before subjecting them to a life of either good health or discomfort. If the novelty is going to wear off and the maintenance and care of your Koi are going to turn out to be too much, then it's time to re-think. If, on the other hand, you are prepared for the work, then your choices will then be determined by cost and space.

Koi Fish are well known to grow quite quickly and quite big. This, naturally depends on certain factors including diet, water quality and sometimes breed. For these reasons you are obviously going to require a minimum amount of space. If you can put a tick next to the "minimum space requirement" box on your checklist, then it really just comes down to cost.

Some people are lucky enough to have enough money that they don't need to worry about the cost and can put in whatever size Koi Pond they like. If, on the other hand, you are more restricted with finances, then you may well find the cost estimate of your "Dream Koi Pond" is enough to give you a migraine. If this is the case, then don't despair! There are more economical options available.

Just as a novice goldfish owner can opt to buy a small and inexpensive fishbowl to start with, or a top-of-the-range aquatic ecosystem (again, no disrespect to the goldfish!), the novice Koi Enthusiast, also has a few choices.

To build a custom-designed, top-of-the-range Koi Pond with all the bells and whistles can indeed be an expensive exercise. Whilst this option can be extremely beautiful and rewarding, it is going to provide little or no enjoyment if you experience financial hardship as a consequence.

Koi Pond Kits, on the other hand, can present a very affordable alternative. Though not as unique as custom-made ponds, they are not only much cheaper, but they come with all the required equipment to get you started, aside from the Koi themselves of course.

No matter how enthusiastic you are, constructing a Koi Pond from scratch, even if within your means, is just not something everyone can deal with. Some people are completely happy to put in the work caring for their Koi but can't for any number of reasons, manage constructing a custom made pond. Koi Pond Kits offer not only a more inexpensive option, but also a much faster and easier option.

Any Kit will include a checklist and directions for you to follow to make maintenance as easy and un-complicated as possible. Koi Pond Kits are available with either moulded basins or with flexible pond liners. In either case, you will need to dig a pre-defined hole in which to place your basin or liner. Obviously, with the flexible liner, you can have any shape you want (within the guidelines of the kit specifications, of course).

Some enthusiasts would argue that if you're going to have a Koi Pond then get the biggest you can, since your Koi are going to grow quite big. This makes sense, but sometimes, it is simply not an expense that can be justified when considered next to ones personal financial obligations. This brings us back to the Koi Pond Kit option - a fantastic alternative that should not be viewed with cynicism.

Whether you select a custom-built Koi Pond or a Koi Pond Kit, don't be distracted by the pond itself. After all, it is a home for your Koi.

Remember this, just as the homes we all live in vary in shape and size, so do the homes of our pets, and from their perspective, Home is where the Heart Is! If they're happy and healthy, that's what matters most!

One of the basic cycles in nature is the nitrogen cycle. Your Koi filter does more than filter out solid waste. A properly set up Koi filter will also process the wastes that build up in any closed ecosystem. Ammonia, nitrites and nitrates are also handled by your Koi filter keeping your fish healthy and happy and providing a food source for your plants.

The threat of algae will always be present in any pond but there are some measures that can be taken to discourage this growth. Algae is not necessarily detrimental to a pond unless it gets totally out of control. Measures such as water movement to avoid any stagnant water will discourage algae. Vigorous plant life is the pond owners best defence particularly if it is part of the ponds design from the very beginning.

Nothing epitomizes sublime beauty quite like the White Koi. Valued for its purity in form & color, the Platinum Ogon, as it is more commonly referred to amongst enthusiasts, has turned out to be somewhat of a "standard" for many koi ponds worldwide. This popularity is due partly to the fact that they are able to grow rapidly and are surprisingly easy to see in the murky water of poorly filtered ponds. They stand out beautifully alongside the host of colors of other koi varieties.
