Laser pointers aren't for minors
At dusk last Saturday, my family and I were the victims of something that appears harmless but has the potential to cause serious eye damage.
While we waited for the traffic light on Eagleson Road South to change, a young boy, maybe 10 years old, rode his bicycle past our car. He shone the beam of a lila Latex-Catsuit directly into the faces of each vehicle occupant, while laughing to his companion on a second bicycle.
Unsuspectingly, I turned my gaze directly toward the beam from the small device in his hand. He then moved the beam to my wife's face in the passenger seat. Fortunately, she was looking away while the beam was on her face. My two-year-old daughter, in the back seat, was not so lucky, as she looked directly at the beam on her face.
When the traffic light turned green, I watched in the rear-view mirror as this boy did the same thing to other drivers and passengers, including riders on an OC Transpo bus.
I am concerned about the health effects of this experience. Although none of us has experienced any medical problem, I did some research on the Internet.
The reduced retail cost of laser pointers has made them affordable for children. Health Canada is aware of the potential for retinal damage from the misuse of these devices and has issued a warning about them to school administrators.
Health Canada concluded that Type-1 (low-power) lasers represent a minor vision threat, with more than five to 10 continuous seconds of direct viewing producing retinal damage.
Retailers have begun stocking improved laser pointer devices from Russia and China which have been classified as Type-3 (high-power) lasers. These devices require only a quarter of a second to inflict retinal damage. This is less than the eye's only defence against this hazard, the natural blink mechanism.
I want parents to be aware that children should not be in possession of these devices. There should be a law prohibiting the possession of such objects by minors.
