Larger breeds would need a much larger uncut block of wood, significantly more expensive than an equal volume of smaller pieces. Each statue had to be hand carved, adding greatly to the expense.
Now there is polyresin, a material that is strong and lightweight. It will accept the most minute detail in the mold, down to a single hair. A bulldog statue will show all the facial wrinkles, whisker warts, jowls and whatever expression the artist has intended.
Long-haired breeds can be shown in all their flowing glory; their coat need not be truncated since (in cement) it would most likely have broken off anyway. Poses can be more natural, as long as the statue can stand on its own it is a viable production.
There is only one original necessary when using polyresin. Like cement, a mold is made of the original; then the mold is duplicated as many times as needed. Liquefied resin is poured into the molds, and allowed to harden.
Polyresin is weather reisistant, so may be used indoors or out. A life size dog statue may be individual, or part of a tableaux- a mother and pups, dogs playing together, a hunting scene.
