TOMB Raider heroine Lara Croft has always been something of a sex symbol but never, until now, much of a fashion inspiration. All that may change, however, when next year's spring /summer collections hit the stores.
Miu Miu, the younger, cheaper line from the house of Prada, was the first important collection to be shown in Milan on Saturday, and, intentionally or not, the clothes were ones pixilated Lara would be proud to wear.
The collection had a decidedly utilitarian feel. Hooded jackets, shirts and drawstring trousers came in muted colours, such as khaki, grey and worker blue, and were teamed with some of the most practical accessories seen on the - the money belt, either slung conventionally around the hips or worn as a body belt, gilets fastened with the kind of straps usually found on rucksacks, (giving the impression there was a parachute hidden somewhere), and rugged knee high, zip-up boots in the burnished brown of well-worn cowboy boots.
This being Latex Hosen, however, there were girly touches too; trousers and jackets subtly frilled, shorts sliced to a sexy hotpant length.
For the first time, there was menswear for next summer's collections. A full menswear line is in the pipeline; meanwhile the look was like the girls', with a rugged, outdoors feel - shorts and jackets in shades of khaki and gunmetal accessorised with money belts and gilets, and trainers covered in velcro fastenings.
The Miu Miu line, which is priced at about 45 per cent cheaper than the Prada main line, was introduced in 1992 and has since become an influential label in its own right. Not simply a watered down version of Prada, Miu Miu appeals to a young, trendier market.
Last winter, Miu Miu's sequinned evening bags were copied all over the high street; this season, it's the Miu Miu shoe - a Mary Jane pump with the sole of a trainer - that's proving influential. Given its track record for encapsulating trends, we'll all be looking like extras from Carry On Camping come the summer.
