60 days to MAH-CET 2011: Be expert in mental calculation, says topper
There are just two months left for Maharashtra Common Entrance Test (MAH-CET). It is the biggest state level exam for Maharashtra and as big and popular as any national level exam, as it is the door for entering prestigious B-schools based in Mumbai, like JBIMS, SPJIMR. The MAH-CET paper contains 200 questions and the duration is 150 minutes. There is no negative marking in the paper, which acts as the plus point for the test takers. Unlike other MBA entrance exams, there is no sectional division of the paper. The areas which are tested are Quantitative Ability, Verbal Ability, Data Interpretation/Sufficiency and Reasoning.
Highlight of MAH-CET 2010
MAH-CET 2010 paper was an easy paper without any surprises. The overall difficulty level was from easy to moderate. The Quantitative Ability section consisted questions on Time-Speed-Distance, Profit Loss, Geometry, Ratios and Permutation and Combinations. The Verbal Ability section had one Reading Comprehension passage with 15 questions. There were questions on Fill in the blanks, Para jumble, sentence correction, parenthesis and Critical Reasoning.
The Data Interpretation and Data Sufficiency section was simple in nature. The questions were based on Tables and Graphs. The questions on Reasoning were on the topics of alphanumeric series, conditional coding, number series, linear and circular arrangement, symbol based comparison, selection and word arrangement machine. The Visual Reasoning questions were on the topics of series completion, wrong element in the series, dissimilar pair.
Tips for cracking MAH-CET 2011
By now you have taken most of the MBA entrance exams which tested you on the similar areas like the Quantitative Ability, Verbal Ability, Reading Comprehension, Analytical Reasoning, Data Interpretation and Data Sufficiency. If your basics are strong, you won't face much trouble answering the questions.
But the paper is different from other entrance exams in a way that it does not have any negative marking system, and the paper is mainly speed based. So you have to leverage on attempting more and more questions and solving them accurately. "Be prompt in mental calculation as it will save much time of yours and contribute in maximizing attempts," suggested an expert from leading MBA test prep institute.
Practice as much as possible the sample papers and previous year's MAH-CET paper to increase your chances. Make it your goal to attempt at least 180 to 185 questions. Start with your stronger section and gradually move towards the not so comfortable section.
MAH-CET is a speed based test. Talking about this, Mitesh Thakkar, a JBIMS student and 99.99 percentiler in MAH-CET says, "MAH-CET requires very high speed of paper solving, so you must be well aware of your strong and weak areas before going for exam. One has to be absolutely conscious of time and even a few minutes not spent strategically can make a difference."
Visual Reasoning is one peculiarity of MAH-CET. For this, you should pay extra attention to this part. For this, solving previous year's question papers is the best way of practice. Thakkar also gives the following suggestions for the MAH-CET aspirants:
1) Solve and analyze as many papers as you can. It is the key to success.
2) Concentrate on speed and maximize your attempt.
3) Do not do calculations accurate till last digit, do mental calculations and approximate the answers.
4) Do not neglect Visual reasoning. It can be one section which will make or break your chances.
