I had the rare opportunity of working and to some degree having a personal relationship with one of the most visible and promising academic leader in this part of the world. Within this brief period I never thought and even suspected that something big was in store for the man who trusted me as one of his close confidant. What is clear to me even at this time is his deep sense of sch9larship and wide ranging interest. Though he had his own management style which I do not totally agree but I could sense his astuteness especially when it comes to financial and budgetary matters. This is an area where most administrators and managers meet their Waterloo.
Today, the man who for many reasons has been idolized by his loyal supporters has risen to the highest post of the System. He now sits as the 6th and incumbent president. In the eyes of his supporters he personifies a new type of leadership who could bring fresh and salutary contribution to a system plague with a heavy cargo of traditional cultural baggages.
On the other hand, his critics and detractors are not far behind. Some people are so bitter about everything about the person including even his ethnic affiliation which of course has nothing to do with his being a leader much more so that it is in an academic setting. This makes the person more intriguing. What is in him that generates such intense emotions. In one gathering where I had the chance to say something about him, I said that definitely he is no saint.
