BBG Communications : Florida College of Journalism and Communications

A constituent college of the University of Florida, the College of Journalism and Communications has four departments:

1. Department of Journalism

2. Department of Telecommunication

3. Department of Advertising

4. Department of Public Relations

The college started out as the Department of Journalism which was established in the Language Hall in 1925. The first chair of the department was Orland K. "O.K." Armstrong. The department awarded the first journalism degrees to its three graduates in 1928.

In 1937, the department established itself in the refurbished Buckman Hall, formerly a dormitory.

In 1949, the journalism faculty added Rae O. Weimer, former managing editor at the New York City daily newspaper PM, to its roster. Accreditation for the journalism program was granted in 1950, despite the fact that at the time it had only "one classroom, no equipment and only two teachers." When broadcasting was transferred to journalism in late 1953, the department transformed into the School of Journalism and Communications.

The growth of the School of Journalism and Communications in the 1960s was phenomenal. It was then the fastest-growing journalism program nationwide and the fastest-growing unit at University of Florida. This was due largely to the school’s fame arising from its huge success at the annual Hearst Foundation's national collegiate writing contest.

In 1967, the school was elevated to college status. Weimer was appointed as its first dean. As the "founding father" of journalism at UF, the present journalism building was named Weimer Hall after the first dean of the college.

The jewel of UF’s journalism programs is WUFT, consisting of a PBS television station and an NPR radio station. WRUF AM850, the program’s radio station, is also one of the longest-operating stations in Florida.
