Cardiovascular Technology – Career Studies

Posted: Dec 02, 2010 |

The skills required to work with cardiovascular patients is gained through specialized training. Students can enter a concentrated degree program from numerous cardiovascular technology schools to gain an education. Career studies are extremely focused and prepare students to work effectively inside medical facilities.

Education is centered on teaching students how to perform invasive, non-invasive, and cardiovascular examinations. Students learn how to work with physicians to diagnose cardiovascular conditions by performing specific procedures on patients. These procedures can provide detailed information on whether patients have blockages in their blood vessels or have problematic blood flow. Career studies generally require students to choose a concentration. Students inside an associate's or bachelor's degree program can choose from the three major areas of study, which include echocardiology, invasive cardiology, and vascular cardiology. Master's degree programs teach students in depth knowledge in cardiovascular science.

*Echocardiology

Students explore how to work with sonograms in order to view the heart. Training prepares students to generate images of the heart to assess any troublesome areas. Technologists work with a physician to diagnose any problems with the cardiac tissue or function of specific areas of the heart. The main purpose is to diagnose heart disease. Students learn how to evaluate the heart in all areas to be able to detect any abnormalities.

*Invasive Cardiology

The training to perform invasive procedures provides students with the needed knowledge to assist physicians with invasive cardiology. Career studies train students on procedures like cardiac catheterization, which is where a tube is threaded into a patient's artery to examine if there is a blockage inside a blood vessel. Other procedures like balloon angioplasty, which treat blockages are also covered. Students should expect to learn how to monitor a patient's blood pressure and heartbeat to help a physician during and after surgery.

*Vascular Technology

Trained students help physicians diagnose any problems with circulation. Education trains students how to gather a patient's medical history and listen to the heart to detect any potential problems. Students learn how to assist and perform non-invasive treatments by using equipment to document vascular pressure, blood flow, circulation, and more.

Each of these specific concentrations is learned through the examination of the field in courses that include chemistry, technology, cardiovascular rehabilitation, physiology, and anatomy. Students work through the same basic courses before beginning their concentration. A cardiovascular pharmacology course teaches students about the different drugs used in the profession. Invasive and non-invasive drugs and how to correctly calculate dosages are studied. This introductory course covers the side effects of drugs and how to give them to patients. An assessments course trains students to perform examinations like cardiac stress tests. The focus is to determine if a patient has any problems that need to be treated. Courses like this and others provide foundational knowledge on procedures and equipment to prepare students for more in depth study within their chosen concentration.

Education prepares students to enter the health care field prepared. Students can work through these concentrations and more by deciding to begin education. Students can train to enter this fulfilling career by finding the accredited cardiovascular technology training that fits their personal preference. Agencies like the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) fully accredit training programs that provide a quality education.
