INTRODUCTION;

The dawn of professional courses such as engineering, medicine, law etc may have exaggerated the popularity of BA, BSC, and BCOM&BBA. However, pursuing a graduation in pure arts, Science or commerce and corporate secretary ship too can lead to a number of employment opportunities.

Passing class 12 marks the evolution from school to college for some students and from junior to senior college for others. A few students branch out to professional colleges for engineering, medicine, law, hotel management architecture, fashion technology, design art, etc at this stage. While some take up specialized bachelor's degree course like BMS, BBA, B Com in Accounts and Finance, corporate  secretary ship / Markets / Banking and Insurance or B Sc in Biotech /IT/ Aviation etc.

Scope for Arts and Science Courses:

The Bachelor of Arts (BA) program allows them to study subjects like history, geography, political science, philosophy, economics, psychology , sociology , anthropology, mathematics and English / Hindi / (other language) literature . If you wish to become a secondary school teacher you could pursue a B Ed post the completion of your BA with subjects taught at school levels. A BA degree also paves the way for you to pursue the Master of Arts in any of the above subjects. Decide for one major (rather than dual) as it provides admission into MA. An MA followed by national /state eligibility test could lead to lectureship in a college. MA followed by
B Ed can lead to teaching positions in a junior college or senior secondary school.

B Sc is the first step of the ladder for a career as a scientist or teacher. A major in B Sc strengthens your chances of admission to an M Sc in the same subject or a related interdisciplinary science. B Sc followed by a B Ed leads to teaching positions in secondary school. B Sc with basic physics, chemistry biology (zoology/ botany) is ideal for taking up B Ed in secondary school because these are school subjects. B Sc with an interdisciplinary science such as microbiology or biochemistry is acceptable if a student aspires to pursue an M Sc in order to take up lectureship. M Sc followed by NET / SLET leads to lectureship options,

While M Sc with B Ed leads to teaching positions in junior college or equivalent.

The regular general B Com or corporate secretary ship, foreign trade, is the shrewd choice for those who wish to pursue a professional course such as Chartered Accountancy, Cost and Works (Management) Accountancy, Company Secretary ,chartered financial analyst, ICMA(London)

B Com followed by an M Com general or corporate secretary ship and a qualification in the NET / SLET leads to lectureship in college / university. General M Com followed by B Ed leads to teaching positions in a junior college or equivalent.

M.com (corporate) followed by M.phil in corporate, PhDs in corporate leads to faculty positions in colleges, universities and Management institutes for excellence or equivalent.

 M Phil and PhD are the next stage in the academic ladder from, postgraduates in arts/science / commerce and positions them better for senior faculty positions, and department head ship, as also for careers in research and consultancy / advisory positions, administrative cadre such as  controller of examinations, Registrar,  in the long terms.

Professional Programs

MBA (General), MBA (Corporate secretary ship), Master of computer Applications (math till the plus two or during graduation). , law (LLB-three years), advertising journalism public relations, tourism and travel, hospital management / health administration, human resource management , theatre / drama ( requires participation in drama productions), film editing , film production , B Ed are professional programs open to BA / B Sc / B Com graduates who wish to pursue related career opportunities.

Sound recording / sound engineering / pilot training (physics and math still class 12), food technology / plastic technology / cosmetic technology (chemistry graduation), packaging technology, dietetics and nutrition etc are among the professional courses open to science graduates.

Popularly pursued by B Com graduates, Chartered Accountancy, Cost and Works Accountancy, Company Secretary and Chartered Financial Analyst courses are actually open to BA / B Sc graduates as well.

Employment preferences

BA / B Sc / B Com graduates may take up services sector jobs or marketing and sales, customer service, hospitality, retail banking insurance aviation (cabin crew, ground staff, reservation and ticketing) business process outsourcing, telemarketing, recruiting media operations and administration jobs. Try for jobs through direct applications, after locating opportunities from classified columns and career supplements of prominent newspapers.

BA / B Sc / B Com graduates may apply for the civil services examination (state and union) combined defense services examination exam for assistant commandants in central police organizations and the Indian forest service (only science / engineering graduates) combined graduate level examination (by staff Selection commission) and examination by the Reserve bank of India Services Board for Officers in Grade B direct recruitment) etc. The defense services (Indian army /air force / navy) also offer various recruitment opportunities after graduation. Further they may apply for the post of executives in Banking and insurance sectors both in Private sector and Government organizations. At present there are wider opportunities available for the young and dynamic graduates to pursue higher education abroad. (Strategy of Learn and earn). This will enable them to get employment in companies abroad.Our graduates with research aptitude are recognised worldover in teaching assignments.
