The recent slide in the economy has left many students floundering for choice. The growth of careers once considered rock solid and well paid such as IT and business have slowed down considerably in the past few years. But, be assured that this is not the end of the road. Economies have a way of bouncing back and cyclical phases of depression and growth come and go.

With a global outlook, a career in business has adapted to meet the times. What is now required to succeed is a love of a challenge, a competitive nature, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, out-of-the-box problem solving techniques and a sound knowledge of the basics. If you find that you excel in teamwork, exhibit leadership skills, are good at organizing and communicating, and thrive in a high-stress environment, then this is the career for you. For those students interested in a career in business and management, now is still the time to change those dreams into reality.

When looking for a business degree program, look of one that includes a curriculum heavy on finance, management, analysis, computer applications, and accounting. Degree programs should also offer the study of organizational behavior and involve in-depth research. You can choose from a variety of degree options depending on your long-term career goals and interests, such as:

  • Associate's degree in Business – As a foundation for further education in business, an associate’s degree can also add to your credits towards a Bachelor’s degree. This type of degree is much shorter in duration and covers all the basics, giving the student an accurate idea if he or she is still interested in a career in business.

  • Bachelor's degree in Business – Most employers demand a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in business for any entry-level positions. Armed with a bachelor’s degree in business, graduates can apply for jobs in a wide range of fields such as economics, sales, human resources, finance, and sales to name a few. A BS degree in business administration also assures a higher salary and possibility for growth.

  • Master's degree in Business – If you wish to specialize in a particular area or follow up on research in a certain field of business, this is the way to go. Many people go back to a Master’s degree after several years of work experience in a bid to improve their qualifications and climb the corporate ladder.

  • Doctorate degree in Business – A doctorate degree requires an intensive thesis or research project on an applied field of business. This degree program will qualify you to train, consult or teach in the field of your choice.

As is apparent, business degree programs prepare you for employment in a diverse variety of fields. Graduates can choose from areas such as commerce, healthcare, entertainment, travel management, sales and marketing, finance and investments, human resource management, business consultancy, the government and even non-profit organizations. Irrespective of what you choose, as long as your foundation lies in a comprehensive education in business, you are set on your path to success.
