India is a country which on one hand has the most educated professionals having expertise of different fields and on the other, has equal number of illiterates deprived of education. India has given successful engineers, doctors, MBA's, teachers, etc to the world and all the credit goes to the education system of the country. Though there are a large number of colleges and universities, which have got opened in India, but the fees of the colleges is beyond the reach of many. Education is must for all and it is the source, which adds to the growth of the whole country. Therefore, to make education affordable for every citizen, every university has open learning or correspondence courses.

Correspondence courses allow a person to seek education by sitting at home and shelling out less money with a same respectable degree. Correspondence education is a less expensive way of education, because, the student does not enjoy the luxuries and facilities given by the college. In case of correspondence education, the student has to study on his own through teaching material available in the books provided to him. Though, the quality of teaching and learning differs from the regular college education but even then, the person becomes educated from his own efforts.

The other reason of growing popularity of correspondence courses is that, there is no limitation of seats as in case of regular colleges. In most of the universities in India, providing correspondence courses, as many numbers of students can apply for the courses and study from correspondence education as possible. For taking admission into correspondence education, most of the universities have direct entry; they do not have to go through entrance tests for admission.

The other advantage of distance learning education is that there are no strict eligibility criteria. A student has to be 10+2 pass, in case of admission into a graduate course whereas for post-graduation, the person has to have a graduate degree in any discipline. To take admission in regular colleges, a student has to stand true on various criteria such as percentage criteria. In graduate courses, 10+2 school pass outs can get admission in good colleges only if they have secured more than 75%. For admission into post-graduate courses, most of the colleges have different criteria but the minimum percentage required by the student is 50%.

Working professionals, married women and men, lower middle class or poor people all seek their brighter future by pursuing a correspondence degree. There are people who along with their jobs, also wish to study further. They don't want to leave their jobs and hence, pursue education through correspondence. Many top business schools and universities are providing correspondence courses for such professionals and few of them, are:

v  Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU)

v  Symbiosis, Pune

v  IIM, Ahmedabd

v  IMT, Ghaziabad

v  Delhi University

v  Mumbai University

v  Narsee Monjee College of Commerce and Economics, Mumbai

v  XLRI Management Institute Janshedpur

Due to Correspondence education many people are now independent and are successful in their field. It has given a chance to get educated to those people who are intelligent enough, but could not get good percentage. Because of open learning courses, provided by the colleges of India, more number of people are becoming graduates and post graduate degree holders.

Correspondence courses are not only beneficial for the students, but also for the institutes as they guide many students at a time and earn profit from sources like, application forms, examination forms and the education fee. Even after so much popularity many people do not consider correspondence as the best medium of education which needs to be changed and people pursuing these courses can help in changing their mindsets by accomplishing heights in their respective fields.
