CDS- Combined Defence Services Examination is one of the major examinations conducted by the UPSC. The examination is organised by UPSC twice a year and the applicants take this examination for becoming a part of one of the reputed organisations like Indian Military Academy, Naval Academy, Air Force Academy and Officers Training Academy. The eligibility criteria for all these posts and academies are different, as described below:
- For admission into Indian Military Academy or into Officers' Training Academy the candidate requires valid Degree from a well recognized university or diploma equivalent to it.
- For entry into Naval Academy, the candidate should have done B.Sc. degree with Physics & Mathematics as his subjects or must be a Bachelor in Engineering
- For entrance into Air Force Academy, the applicant requires the Degree of a reputed University with subjects- Physics and Mathematics at the 10+2 level or should be a graduate in Engineering.
The applicants applying for these entrance examinations should be unmarried. Also, different age limits are set by the UPSC, for its various academies, which are as follows:
- Age limit for Indian Military Academy is 19-24 Years
- Age limit for Air Force Academy is 19-23 Years
- Age limit for Naval Academy is 19-22 Years
- Age limit for Officers' Training Academy is 19-25 Years
All the exams covered under CDS are objective based and the pattern for examinations of Indian Military Academy, Air Force Academy and Naval Academy is same. All these exams are for 300 marks, 100 each for English, Elementary Mathematics and General Knowledge. The pattern of the examination for Officer's Training Academy is different from others, as it is of 200 marks, 100 each for General Knowledge and English sections. After clearing these written examinations, candidates are called for the interview round conducted by Services Selection Board. This board is responsible for evaluation and selection of the candidate in the Armed forces of India, as per his calibre. The Notice for CDS is generally issued every year in August and March and therefore the examinations are conducted in the months of February and August respectively.
The candidates applying for the Combined Defence Services Examination, has to be mentally and physically fit. General awareness is an important aspect, which helps the candidate to clear the exam and same is the case in CDS. Students applying for these examinations, do a proper preparation before the exams, which increases their chances of clearing the entrance.
