Considerations for Getting Information for International Students

Posted: Mar 12, 2011 |Comments: 0 |

Even though the Internet has had the effect of making the world seem like a smaller place, it's still difficult for international students to get information when they're in their home country speaking to a university in the United States. Many universities are making this easier on international students by putting up sophisticated websites that allow them to access whatever information they need at any time of the day or night. The day and night will be big considerations when you're trying to get information from universities. Depending upon where you're located, you may be dealing with the time difference that means that office hours in your nation are on the other side of the clock than they are in the US.

You may have to be willing to talk to the university in the middle of the night in your own nation to get the information that you need. Fortunately, many universities make this easier on you by installing features on their websites that make it unnecessary for you to make expensive international phone calls. Among these are live chat features. These allow you to speak with a faculty member without using the phone and, of course, to have a written record of what was said, which can be a big help when you're trying to recall what the faculty member needed you to do or what information they needed you to send.

There will always be some difficulties characteristic of trying to find information about a school that's located halfway across the world. Some universities have specialized staff members that work with international students. Make sure you're always talking to one of the staff members when you're asking for information. These staff members will know the difference between what a international student needs and what a student from the US needs.

Remember that deadlines may be different in the US than they are in your own nation. For example, if you're in Asia and are a day ahead of the US, you may have extra time to meet deadlines. In other time zones, you may have to accommodate deadlines that are a bit shorter. Make sure you take all of this into consideration so that any paperwork you need to submit is processed in a timely way and that any funding you need isn't held up because of bureaucratic delays.
