Cutting Costs: Deals & Discounts on Student Supplies

Posted: May 18, 2009 | Comments: 0 | Views: 51 | Bookmark and Share

As new college students transition from home to college life, they faced with the new challenge of learning how to budget. Between eating out, paying bills and purchasing textbooks and school supplies, spending can spike quickly. Luckily, when it comes to textbooks and school supplies there are many deals and discounts available to students.

While textbook publishers and bookstores seem to charge an arm and a leg for supplies, the internet offers the same products at discounted prices. A great Web site to find supplies is Amazon.com. Amazon has a large selection and offers free shipping, product reviews, low prices and high availability. Half.com is also a great Web site to find supplies. This website is ideal for anyone interested in selling or buying used CD's, books or videos. A partner of EBay, Half.com allows users to post these items and have shoppers to bid on them. To ensure quality products, like EBay, Half.com employs a rating system for items being sold as well as an option for previous buyers to rate sellers. Online buyers beware, shipping cost and time do apply. So, when purchasing online be sure to do it in ample time before the start of the semester.

Buying used can also be a way to save. Both bookstores and Web sites sell used books at a discounts price. The bonus with buying used is at the end of the semester you can usually sell the items back for cash.

Ask a friend or relative for their old books or supplies can also be a way to save. Another option, though not highly recommended, is to buy textbooks with a classmate and share the books. This may pose a problem though if you and your classmate have conflicting studying schedules. If you do choose this option, ensure you and your classmate work out a sharing/studying schedule.
